Mardi Gras 2009 in Downtown Honolulu

Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday, a work night. I can't believe I went. Thanks to Erick and Leslie and all the other crazy people that were out, I had a great time.

This guy was throwing out beads, and I couldn't believe it when one landed right by my feet. I also couldn't believe it when it got snatched right out of my hands . . .
by the woman on the right. Looks like she gave it to her mom, so all was forgiven.
After this picture was taken, the beautiful woman gave me and Les our only beads for the night, and we didn't even have to expose anything.

The booze was flowing . . . but not for me and Les. We got some jambalaya with cornbread instead, and boy was it good!

Me and Les were in the perfect spot when the parade started.
This is Leslie's newest friend, Ghandi Jones. Check out his dance moves on Leslie's blog.

Les, you sooo funny. Do you remember taking pictures of the people that were making out? He was to the left of them.

These pictures are awesome! For some reason, I can't imagine Hawaii celebrating Mardi Gras. Is this something that just started there, I don't remember hearing about this growing up. My first husband and I went to Shreveport, LA back in the 60's. That was the closest we got to New Orleans. There was a Mardi Gras celebration going on and we went to go see. I was not comfortable at all with what was going on. The costumes and colors were pretty awesome though, as I remember.

Betty: I don't even know when we started celebrating Mardi Gras here. It is normally so not my thing to do, but picture taking is and it provided the perfect photo op. It was pretty wild to me and alone, I would've been terrified. But with Erick and Les, I just had a blast. Me and Les did have to hold hands a few times though, 'cause I was scared we would get separated.
