Mango Trees

I talked about my neighbor's mango tree before.  You can read one of the posts here

The tree hasn't produced any mangoes on our side for the past few years, but a few weeks ago I noticed five low-hanging ones.

Unfortunately, as they've gotten bigger and heavier, all but one are now sagging into the neighbor's side of the fence.

This tree below is a different tree. It belongs to a different neighbor. It's a fairly new neighbor, and I've never asked about picking the mangoes on our side before, but the tree has never had a crop like it has this year.

They have two trees, and they're both loaded. The mango are not ripe yet, and I'm not even sure what kind they are. We'll see.

Aspiration

There is a young Australian artist by the name of Hieu Nguyen who goes by the name of "kelogsloops". I wish that I had just a smidgen of his talent.

Here's one of his videos. I've watched it over and over.

Here's my attempt. Not pau. Been working on it for awhile, and I know I won't even come close. But I'll keep trying.

BTW, the color combination - Winsor and Newton's Payne's Grey + Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Gold + QoR's Venetian Red = 💖

Flickr Fixed!

Yippee! Poor Flickr guys. I bet they were majorly stressing.

Here's what I was trying to post during the down time.

I took this photo at around 5 a.m. last Thursday. I'm using Iraville's Cozy Days book for reference.
IMG_1389

At around 7:15 a.m. Wendell and I took my car in for a couple recall services.  It'll be at the shop all weekend so they gave me a loaner. If you ever saw all the dings in my car you'll know why I'll probably just stay at home and not drive the loaner.

After dropping off my car Wendell wanted to eat pancakes so we went to Eggs 'n Things.  There's no line nowadays so we went straight in.

Wendell had the Loco Moco ($11.00).
IMG_1392

This is my Eggs Benedict ($13.50).  I ate the other half for dinner the next day. Ono!!!
IMG_1393

This came with my meal. Wendell ate it. (I confess . . . I took a few bites too).
IMG_1396

I finished this at around 5:00 p.m.

Update

Flickr has been down for a couple of days now. I haven't been able to upload photos to share.  They were supposed to be down for only about 12 hours, so I'm thinking the problem will be fixed soon.

Just wanted to let you know.

Daiso

I finally got to go to Daiso today.  Wendell had an appointment at Queen's POB, and because I badly need to get in some exercise I decided to catch a ride with him to the doctor's office and then walk to Daiso from there.

It was a mile walk. It took 17 minutes and around 2,300 steps . . . actually not that many steps but better than nothing yah.

Here's what I got ($19.90).

Wendell's Shrimp with Broccoli

Lately, Wendell usually just has a protein shake for dinner, Landon's been staying away from carbs and I don't eat too much meat.

With the mismatch of preferences, Wendell hasn't been cooking as much as before.

But he did see this Hawaiian Electric Shrimp with Broccoli recipe in the newspaper the other day and decided to make it.  The recipe can be found here. I liked the peanut-y flavor.

Iyasume Kahala Mall

Next time you're at Kahala Mall you can get your musubi fix at Iyasume!  It's right next door to Jamba Juice.

IMG_1343

Most of the musubi are made to order so you're given a pager that'll let you know when your order is ready.
IMG_1347

Mine only took a few minutes . . .  konbu, tuna/mayo and spam musubi (around $6.00). They hit the spot . . . for lunch and dinner.

Masking Fluid

I drew this fish yesterday and lined it with masking fluid.

IMG_1304

I bought this from Walmart a long time ago for $5 something. I haven't seen it there since, and the cheapest I can find it now is twice that price.
IMG_1312

I got this contraption from Amazon for $7.99.
IMG_1307

This is the most fun part. After the masking fluid dried, I painted the fish and then puuuulllled the dried fluid off.
IMG_1309

Cute yah. I saw this fish awhile back online and finally got to try it myself.

Latest Project

For my latest project for Lunalilo Home, I started by making this stencil.

IMG_1297

I then used a Stabilo pencil and Posca marker . . .
IMG_1302

to do this . . .
IMG_1295

and made 30 of these!! (Well, actually 32, but I ruined two when I sprayed a fixative on them. #$Q% %^).

It was really fast to do . . . 17 minutes per pot . . . so I was done in no time.

Plants will be given away to guests at a special dinner function that Lunalilo Home is hosting later this month.

Cozy Days

Here's a painting that I copied from my newest art book, Cozy Days the Art of Iraville. I love her whimsical watercolor work.

Hagoromo Chalk

I thought this chalk story was so interesting. I can totally relate to the hoarding aspect.  Thanks for sharing, Kevin!

Ganesh Dosa

I went to Ganesh Dosa in Ohana Hale Marketplace yesterday and bought the "Chef's Recommendation" crepe. Even though it wasn't until about an hour later that I was able to eat it, it was still ono.

IMG_1252

The crepe was crunchy/chewy with a seasoning that was slightly curryish. It came with a soup that was a bit too spicy for me so Landon had it with his dinner.
DSCF7321

It was huge and was cut in two to fit into the take-out container. Still, even though I liked it, at $15 it's probably not something I'd order often.

Breakthrough Painting

Here is another "trying to copy Esther Gili" painting.

I used the light-wash technique that I learned when I did the see-through poppy painting . . . little paint + lots of water.

It took many coats (4 or 5) and lots of patience until I was satisfied with the saturation. I actually didn't think it would happen and at one point was prepared to rip out and toss the page.

Tips:
1.  Be patient. Dry well before next coat.
2.  Quickly dab with paper towel if you screw up.
3.  QoR's Venetian Red heavily diluted makes a lovely flesh tone.
4.  Use 100% cotton watercolor paper for best results.

Watercolor Paper at Ross

Remember my tip about using 100% cotton watercolor paper? Look what I found at Ross yesterday. And it was cheap. $5.99.

If you google, you'll find that pads smaller than this size will go for $20 something. This pad is so big that I'll be able to make eight 5 x 7-inch greeting cards from a single page.

DSCF6919

And the quality is great.  Inspiration for this painting came from an Amazon reviewer.
DSCF6925

Just FYI in case you're thinking of going to Ross, Kahala didn't have any, and there was only one left at Hawaii Kai.
