Vegan Diet - Day 30

The lab results are in, and although the numbers are a bit better, they're not as spectacularly improved as I was expecting. In fact, my triglycerides went up by a lot and my good cholesterol went down.

According to info that Leslie sent me, I probably needed to be exercising more, especially since I've been eating more carbs on this diet.

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly "easy" calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia).

So, after a month of vegan eating, I think I'm gonna be lightening up a bit. Meat is still OUT. But donuts are IN.

Good job, Jalna! Slow but steady is always better than a rocket that burns out. Oh, and regarding cholesterol and how it can cause heart failure and clogged arteries - it hasn't been proven, but yet taking statin drugs to control cholesterol is the doctors' standard treatment. Aunty's advice - DON'T take statin drugs!!! Side effects can be devastating.

Regarding exercise - Aunty hates to exercise but knows she must. So TaiChi is slow and easy but is taking me years to learn. Here's a very easy and quick one from one of the health people I follow - 3 minutes, breathe through the nose only, no special equipment needed.

Keep on keeping on, my friend! Oh, and btw, the vegan restaurant "Water Drop" (on Alakea and Queen) was okay. Actually not bad for vegetarian food. Parking is junk but Wandaful and I got lucky. The little vegetable shop next door to it is run by a bleached blonde/pink carnivore and has some good spices and snacks.

Yeah, donuts over meat anytime...even though they're bad too! We've been doing almond milk: )I bought some no hormone and steroid injected chicken and they are less than half the size of the "normal" chicken we've been buying. I know someone who's been cooking more from scratch and using gluten free and vegan ingredients to help with a family member having health issues. But you're right...the cost is higher to eat this way but I think it's worth it in the long run.

I've tried vegan food; it's not for me, too bland. I try to eat healthy and organically. My trip to Japan, I DID NOT deprive myself, I
pounded the food..... so oishi.

But still hard fo' understand after you wen do all da right things, yeah. What our docs always says. You're really only eating veggies. -N

V, I ate two in two days!! But, you're right. I'll try and resist. But Donut King is right by Ben Franklin. And I go there a lot . . .

Thanks Aunty. I watched the video. I think I can handle that. Thanks for the scoop on Water Drop too. Funny about the neighbor!

Susan, that donut was so good, but yah, so bad for you. Glad you and your family are trying to eat more healthy too.

Chet, I agree . . . you cannot deprive yourself while in Japan.

N, I wonder if it takes awhile to see the benefits. Next blood test should be in 3 months. Wonder if i'll still be doing "no meats" by then.
