Mangoes

I'd been waiting for the mangoes on the neighbor's tree to ripen ever since they gave me the green light to pick the ones that are on our side of the fence.

Yesterday was the day.  As soon as I stuck my pole up high into the tree two cardinals landed on a nearby branch and chirped, chirped, chirped at the picker.

One of the mangoes fell to the ground with a big thud.  I decided to cut it and share it with the birds.

Unfortunately, it only attracted flies.

Don't train the birds to eat the mango. They'll start pecking at them on the tree! Especially those bulbuls (with the red ass) or the green parrots.
I once left a couple of mangos on a table in my garage one afternoon and when I went to pick them up that evening, there were already eaten. I hope they were birds at least, and not rats.

V, I would hate for the birds to be pecking at the mangoes on the tree. Grrrrr. Okay, I won't leave any out for them. Are those green parrots everywhere now? Once in awhile I'll see flocks of them while on our morning walk. Not often. I wondered where they live.

I know other places too but they are all over Manoa. My neighbor has 5 huge lychee trees. Past 4-5 years, no lychee because couple dozen or more green parrots attack the trees and strip all the lychee! I can hear them and the ground is littered with half eaten lychee. Doesn't even have time to ripen. Same with my other neighbor's mountain apple.

I don't feed precious mangoes to birds. Except I do like those mejiro birds. So cute when they beep beep beep. After I peel and cut up mango, I leave the seed and skin out for those madagascar lizards. I think that is what they are called. Bright green with blue eyes and diamond patterned backs. They lick and eat and get fat and multiply.

Congrats on your harvest! I am currently watching a tree trimming crew at our neighbor's house next door who has a gnormous pirie mango tree. I would be SO sad if they cut it down.

V, oh no!

Aunty, I love those lizards. Only once in a great while I'll see them in my yard. I hope your neighbor's tree doesn't get chopped.

Kat, wow. Sounds like they're all over the place now.
