The Oahu Club is a private club in Hawaii Kai, and you need to be a member in order to use its facilities. So when Wendell said that Ethel's Grill opened up at the Oahu Club, I was a little confused. It turns out that even though it's located in a private club, Ethel's Grill is open to the public . . . you just need to sign in. You can read more about it here. Wendell wasted no time in checking the place out. He went on the very day that he learned about it.
I took one bite of this Steak Special with Chimichuri ($15.50) and I promise . . . the words "some kind of wonderful" came to my mind. It's the sauce. It would be good with anything. It's veeeery garlicky so a little goes a long way.
The steak dish was such a hit that I decided to try some of this Kim Chee Ahi Poke ($13.75) even though I don't eat raw fish. Guess what. I liked it!
Wendell said that back in the day, Ethel's Grill in Kalihi used to give this Tataki Sashimi ($7.50) as an appetizer for free.
This salad comes with your order. The dressing is good!
Always meant try Ethel's when back home but never did. Thought the Kalihi location was a hassle. Definately have to try on my next trip home. Same goes for Kahai Kitchen. Read they in Moilili. Never tried them either because was out of the way when I play tourist. I like that Nandings on Kapahulu now. Now just need Alicia's and Helena's to open locations near Waikiki.
Ethel's Grill in Kalihi was our fave hole in the wall to grind. Wendell is right, they use to give a free sashimi side dish. What made the place kinda cool was the pictures on the wall of local celebrities. The owner must like sumo; it had that motif. Akebono's pic were were on the wall.It was Mufi Hanneman's favorite place. Plus, the food was ono at a good price. Glad to hear it's in Hawaii Kai.
whaaaaa? How big is the place? The one in Kalihi is great but it's about as big as a closet! The food looks ono too...I can't believe you ate something raw!! I'm so proud of you! Next stop sushi bar?? My treat!
In the late 1980's I lived in a penthouse in the Heritage House condo on Hawaii Kai Drive right next door alomost. Awesome views by the way. I always felt that all of those tennis courts at the Oahu Club was a nasty useless use of good Hawaii Land! Seriously! I was offended! I love OUR AINA!
The food looks great and the prices not so bad for what you get.
Check out the areal drone video at their website below. Nobody needs that many tennis courts! We have public parks with tennis courts everywhere on Oahu!I always thought they were in competition with the Honolulu Club.

Wow, looks good. I never tried the one in Kalihi because the parking was so scarce.
I remember going there in Kalihi with Daddy....I SO recognize one of the owners/chefs from the link....as a former Chef Alan Wong prodigy
Looking ono!

UGH! Such a far drive. Will need to check it out after one of our hikes on the east side.

Kobi, hope you get to try at least one of those places next time you come home!
Mich, Oahu Club has choke parking . . . but you gotta come Hawaii Kai.
Dd, I don't really remember going there with Daddy.
Was, Aunty!!
Chet, I only went to the Kalihi place once . . . and that was to see the "grouchy lady". LOL!.
Awww shucks, Myko. For me it's 2 minutes away.
Hahahaha, Les!
IT IS, Jason!!
Very yummy, Kat.
I still haven't tried Ethels Grill, yet.
Parking is the problem.
But just looking at the pictures, I wish I could try some.
Everything looks delicious! It's a take out place?
I read that they were opening there too. After seeing your pics and getting your comments, we gotta go now! Thanks!!!
Mmiissee, we'd tried to go to the Kalihi one several times but not been able to find parking.
Susan, it's both eat in and take out.
Dean, I thought about you when Wendell told me about it.
