Japan - Day 10 - Toshogu Shrine

Saturday, October 22, 2016   Nikko National Park

Nikko National Park is one of Japan's major tourist attractions and is famous for the Toshogu Shrine complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consisting of many Shinto and Buddhists buildings.

I anticipated passing by this Shinkyo bridge on the way to the shrine, and was ready to take some quick shots. Luckily, due to traffic in the area I was able to take my time getting photos of the bridge.

The area is set in a beautiful wooded forest. See the kid in the front? Looks like a pro, yah!

This is the line to purchase tickets. Luckily, we didn't have to do that.

There was lots of renovation going on, preparing for 2020, the 100th year anniversary of the shrine and also the upcoming Olympics.

Our hotel for the night was the Kinugawa Park Hotel.

Me and Sweetie actually dragged the futons onto the tatami mat area and slept on the floor.

These look like great shrines to visit, though too bad there weren't lots of kimono clad people there for pictures. Mostly foreign visitors enjoying, which is okay.
I love the gates - called torii, right? Would look weird in my driveway, but I would love to have one.

I saw a lot of the Shinto influence throughout my trip earlier in the year.

You know what, Les . . . I don't even remember stairs, but I must've.

Oh N, I looooove those tatami mat rooms. I like the feel of the mat on my feet. Is that weird?

Hey, you're right Aunty . . . not too many people with kimono. That woulda been cool to photograph.

Izsmom, I wish we had more time to enjoy. Being in a tour group is great because everything is taken care of for you and you get to see and experience so much, but the downside is that your time is restricted and you're really not free to linger if something in particular interests you.

Thanks Kay!

Very interesting yah, Chet.

We stayed Japanese style inn very close to this hotel in 2015...the room wasn't as spacious as this one. The Photos are very nice! Seems like well planned tour.
