Kauai - Kapaa Hongwanji Bon Dance

On the evening of Day 2 we attended a bon dance at Kapaa Hongwanji.

Here is a flying saucer.  I swear . . .  Kauai people are so creative. You can check out coworker Michele's version including her recipe here

Les also got mochi and Chinese pretzels.

The dancing began at around 7:30. We left shortly thereafter . . . because it started to rain . . . and because we were pretty pooped.

I did manage to take a couple of videos. I used my monopod. Yay!!! It came in handy after all!!

Glad you enjoyed the flying saucers. I have 40 in my freezer (bought from different bon dances) to await my son's visit, and when he goes back to Honolulu, he gets to take all of those back with him! Those young ones can eat 3-4 at a sitting!

It was so ono, Lorna!

Jenny, I didn't even think to bring back some. I guess we could've. We had refrigerator in our room.

Aunty, it's cool that you have friends who live there.

So special treats, Kat.

We have the Japanese fall festival here and the second vid looks like the bon dance they do. I love going and it's super crowded but it kinda reminds me of my childhood in Okinawa. We love the food too!

Susan, I never realized that you have a Japanese community there too.

Ho man I look all had-its. So glad we went, was fun yah? Your video came out good!!!

Yes we do Jalna. Lots of Japanese/Okinawan families live here. They work in the tour companies, hotels, or own businesses. I think we only have 2 stores that carry Japanese products exclusively. JAL and ANA fly here ;)

I shoulda known, Susan. You guys are a whole lot closer to Japan than us.
