For lunch on our first day on Kauai we had Mexican food at Federico's . . . because . . . you know . . . Hamura Saimin was breakfast. Riiiiight? Plus, we were heading to Hanalei in hopes of getting sunset shots of the pier there, and sunset time was a long way off. So with choke time to spare, we decided that a leisurely lunch stop would be good.
Federico's is located at the Princeville Center.
I almost got the Chef's Nachos . . .
but decided on the Garlic Herb Shrimp Taco instead.
I also got an Aguas Frescas ($3.00) which is a fruit drink. I forgot to take a picture of it, but it was delicious and very refreshing.
This is my Garlic Herb Shrimp Taco ($5.25). It was really, really good!
This is Leslie's Al Pastor Taco ($4.50) and side order of rice ($2.95). She was, unfortunately, not impressed.
We also shared this Caramel Mexican Flan ($4.25). It was deeeelicious . . . so smooth and creamy.
It turns out that there are a lot of Mexican restaurants on Kauai. I wonder which one is the best.
An Al Pastor taco is a pork taco. I make those at home sometimes with my left over crock pot Kalua Pig. It's the spices and veggies that really make it. The one you pictured was dull, they don't know how to make it.
Your best bet for a taco is the Carne Asada taco. It's chopped steak. I do that at home too. Tastes much better than chicken or pork, for a taco. And I always use a corn tortilla, not flour! That's the other reason why her al pastor taco didn't taste good.
I looked up recipes for Al Pastor tacos and found this.
