Wendell's Boiled Peanuts

Wendell's been into making boiled peanuts lately. I think he made about 3 batches in the last few weeks. I like it; it's kinda crunchy.

4 lb. raw peanuts
1 cup Hawaiian salt
6 - 8 star anise
2 Tablespoons sugar
Handful lemon peel
1 cinnamon stick
Water to cover

Heat until boiling. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 1 1/2 hours. Drain immediately.

I love boiled peanuts!! I can remember stopping to buy a bag from the Chinese ladies that use to be outside of the Honolulu Stadium. We'd stop to buy some after Kaimuki High's football games!!

Kat, it was lemon "peel" that Wendell put it, and it's not the crackseed snack kine. It's more dried out and is used for cooking. Wendell got it in Chinatown.

Betty, do you remember the guy that would walk around inside the stadium selling the peanuts? He had a hairlip. He would shout, "Peanuts . . . peanuts!", although not so clearly. Hey, I just thought of something . . . are they called "peanuts" because they're nuts and they're shaped like peas? Hahaha.

I remember the ladies that used to sit outside the old termite place. Their peanuts were always hot, cooked to perfection and ONO. They had the best boiled peanuts! Everytime I eat boiled peanuts I think about those ladies.

Randal, we were just talking about those farmer's market peanuts. Too bad no more anymore. I hate it when things change . . . I wish they could stay the same FOREVER.

Erick, how did they keep it hot? Do you remember?
