Wendell's Tonkatsu
Not to be outdone by Menchanko Tei, Wendell made tonkatsu for dinner last night. It was so good that I ended up eating 1 1/2 pieces.
He started by pounding the pork.
I asked Wendell what cut of pork he bought. He said, "Tonkatsu." K, I've heard of butt, shoulder, tenderloin, belly, etc. but I never heard of a cut called tonkatsu. So I asked again. He said, "Tonkatsu." Now, if you've been married as long as I have, you know better than to ask a third time. So peoples, this cut is called "tonkatsu".
He seasoned with garlic salt and pepper and then dunked in flour, egg and panko.
Then he deep fried.
We used a bottled sauce . . . not da kine freshly-ground sesame seed, but still was good.

looks awesome! looks like his retirement has given you some great meals!
I can see why - you enjoyed Wendell's tonkatsu. Yay a husband that can cook. As well as your son. You lucked out.
Really yah, Jenny. And then now I'm part-time too so I'm home early enough to get da action shots!!
Thanks, Celia!
Oh, yummers. I can never make a good katsu (chicken or pork), and I guess the first step is pounding the heck out of the meat!!!
Nice plating. That looks like the pork top loin chop. I never thought of pounding the meat when I make tonkatsu because it's a thin cut, but I will try it next time. It might make it more tender yeah?
J: you always make me lol, especially with the 'tonkatsu cut'. lol. I think tho at Marukai they do offer a tonkatsu cut, like how they make thin cuts shabu shabu. Tonkatsu my fave, I think I can eat it weekly. Is there a place I can nom you as the best local blog? -N
LOL, he did pound it a bit, Lorna. In fact, that's what drew me into the kitchen to find out what all the racket was about.
Aaah, Susan, "pork top loin chop"! It was very tender.
N, I don't go marketing enough. I think next time I go to Marukai, I'll pay more attention to the meat section. And thanks for the "nom". LOL!
Jalna, you are so lucky to now have a 24 hour per day live in cook!
This is....Awesome!
tonkatsu cut? bwahahahhahaa!!
I agree, Mark!
See, Les, so you never heard of it either? Not just me then. LOL.
That looks so ono. You can get way more than the small piece you get from Menchanko Tei.
That's true, Erick.
That looks so good! Looks moist = )
