Look what Wendell made for me so that snails would have a hard time getting to my lemon plants. So nice yah!
Even so, this is what happened to one of the plants a couple of days ago. Believe it or not, it was actually making a comeback after being chewed up by snails. Now, this is all that's left of it. I noticed it when I got home from work and went out to water the plants. I was about to blame the snails again, until I saw the real culprit.
Some kind of caterpillar. I scooped it up and put it in the front yard far, far away from my lemon plants. It is the fourth predator of my plants. Citrus leaf miner was the first. Then came Damn Rabbit. Then the Suckin' Snails. And now this caterpillar. Good thing I didn't give all of my lemon plants away and kept a bunch for myself. Hopefully at least one will make it until "adulthood".
Wonder why your lemon plants are so popular with everyone, you may recall my five year old plant has kept on growing with no care...it's loaded with lemons right now. Wonder if it's bc the lack of other plants around your place? Try adding a variety of plants around the yard to help distract the invaders.
J: Your poor lemon plants they must taste really good to assorted critters. You no moe old folding table or look at Craigslist to get one free. I think they gotta be off the ground and hopefully Wendall's solution will work.
I read your bunny story LOLing. My mom left her rabbits free and they escaped to the front yard even if had wire mesh all around the backyard. I dunno know how they escaped. They chomped up on the mother-in-law tongue plants daily and they escaped to our neighbor's yards, we found out they were hopping 3-4 houses down the street. I kept warning her but hard head so one day a neighbor grabbed them and now they're in their house. We heard it from our other neighbor next door who is good friends with them.
Wishing your lemon plants an opportunity to grow wild and free Aloha, N
just an idea: if you go to a place like City Mill, go to the paint department; yup, the paint department and ask for the mesh they use to strain paint. it comes in various sizes and is very cheap. i know it won't look very nice but you could protect your plants by creating a little dome using wire or whatever to keep the pests out. air, water, sunlight etc can go through but not the snails or caterpillars. just an idea :-)
I thought about that Didi, but realized that it probably would die if I did that. Hooo, Didi, I just looked it up. It's a Chinese or Citrus Swallowtail! Wonder if it's still in the front yard. LOL.
You're right, Anon. I don't really have a lot of other plants in my yard.
Ahahaha, Mich. I thought of doing that!
N, I hope the neighbors neva eat um.
Good idea, Rand. Wendell could probably build something.
LOL, Jenny!
It was really cute, SW. You can't tell from the picture, but it was only about 1 1/2 inches long.

Ew, kinda yucky looking. Should have thrown it in damn rabbits yard...maybe it would have found something good to eat too!
