Awhile back I saw a program on NHK World about the history of instant ramen. It said that instant ramen was created by the Nissin company back in 1958. This new product surprised everyone and revolutionized the noodle industry. Towards the end of the program they mentioned Nissin's newest product, the Nissin Raoh instant ramen. Restaurant-quality noodles are created using the newest state-of-the art technology and is enhanced by an umami-flavored broth. They said that ramen lovers in Tokyo wait in line outside of a pop-up restaurant which serves it. You can find out more here. I had to wait until Amazon got it in stock, but I finally managed to get ahold of this miso-flavored variety.
The noodles look like this out of the package.
I don't think I'd wait in line for it, but it is the best instant ramen I've ever eaten.
If you have time, you can check out the NHK program here:

I remember you posted recipes for the char siu and egg a while back. Did you make your own for this? could you post the link again? Thanks! Japanese char siu is soooo expensive in Nijiya! thanks, V
Well, I'm sure your toppings also added to the "umami" flavor! If you ever go to Yokohama, go to the Ramen Museum (the Nissin company established that museum --- it's so trippy)!
V, this char siu is from Nijiya, and yah, so expensive. The recipe though is here: http://jalna.blogspot.com/2013/02/jalnas-cha-siu-for-ramen.html. For the eggs, after boiling and peeling, I just put them in a ziplock and poured some strong Tamari shoyu and let them soak for awhile.
LOL, Lorna, my enhancements for sure added to the flavor! I haven't been to Yokohama, but I would love to check out the ramen museum if I ever go there.
Kay, to me "umami" means flavorful, and not necessarily from msg but more naturally. It is said to be the 5th primary taste, next to sweet, salty, bitter and sour.
Wow! They actually wait in a line? I'm a cheapskate! ; )
I do it at home. And there are really no good local kine restaurants around here anyway.
I buy Top Ramen packs at my local $0.99 cent store, 4 packs for a buck! Comes with spice pack inside.

I add spices, shoyu and anything else I can think of. I like making my eggs, egg drop style because I like all of those egg parts swimming all around.
Sometimes I add meat. Other times products from da sea. And veggies always.
I miss the good old days in Hawaii in the 1960's, stopping at Chun Hoon on Nuuanu Ave. walk up window and ordering won ton men on a cold rainy Sunday night after church with my Dad! It was probably $1.00 dollar!
j: fab video and you know I'm a ramen freak though I cut back on my daily consumption down to about 3-4 a week. Yes, Nijiya's char siu went up from $10.99 to $12.99....I had looked up a recipe for the char siu from a person who tried a whole variety ways of making it and the best tasting method she chose was the most hum bug method. -N
j: I ordered mines thru Amazon prime. BTW I've been going through your blog and it's such good reads. Sometimes I laugh outloud - my fave shot was of Kona's nose at a holiday dinner. It was so sweet watching him grow up, so cute his puppy pixs. Where did you get him from? And I read where you quit blogging for a while due to creeper...what made you decide to re-start? I know I put too much info on FB but I only have 33 friends and I decline a lot more. I only have 4 friends I know locally and I use a fake handle so no one can find me using my real name. I see how open hearted you are and so very kind...it radiates through your blog what a good person you are and very giving. You're also so blessed to have close family and BFF friends too. A great reflection of who you are, really. I like your self-deprecating humor too "me and the seven people who follow my blog" LOL that was another funny. I may not say something on each post but do know I read everyone. And now I'm going back into the past......N
Awwww . . . thank you so much, N. I'm really not all that you say. I can be loud and abrasive and I wish that I were sweeter . . . but I'm working on it. Kona? He came from Kona!!
BTW-I just went on amazon to look for that Tonkatsu flavored one....eeekkksss $32.13/10 pack REALLY ?? now I understand why a restaurant would be serving it ...
Dd, should I write a letter to Marukai? LOL. And yah, it is expensive for an instant ramen, but I figure even with all the fixings that I add in, it's still a cheap meal.

When they say umami, do they mean more msg? It sure does look wonderful!

if I remember correctly, this was being served at a train station in Osaka and people lined up to eat it.
It's expensive, I going to try anyway since you said it was good. Does it come with the egg and pork? No need nori, I already have.
Me thinks umami means heavy on the sodium!haha did you read the amt ? It's over a thousand.I congratulate you if your blood pressure is normal.
Awwww Mark, love walking down the memory lane of your mind.
Ooooh, thanks for the validation, Kat!
Erick! Erick! Leslie ordered the tonkotsu variety, and it was really good.
Anon, over 1,000! No wonda so ono.
N, wasn't that program so interesting!
I just ate yours last night and I liked it!! Hmmmm, not sure which one I like better now. Still wish they had a multi-pack!
I ordered the miso yesterday. I'll try order the tonkotsu after I try the miso.
Me too, Les.
Hope you like it, Erick.
Hi Jaina
Does Nijiya or Marukai sell these ramen here in Honolulu? Or do you have to go through Amazon?
Craig, I haven't seen it here yet.
