I got good news and bad news. The good news is that I found this hole-in-the wall place on the corner of Makaloa and Kalakaua that makes good hamburgers. They taste just like the homemade ones that kid-time we used to buy for 25 cents at Palolo Sundries. The bad news is that me and Brandee scarfed the burgers before I even realized that I never got to take a picture of them. It's okay though 'cause they weren't that photogenic . . . not fancy, no lettuce, no tomato, no onions, just lots of slathered-on-stuff on a plain bun and just ono. It was $1.75 for a cheeseburger.
This is Wa. He said he's been there since 1997, and he's worried because the building is for sale and he doesn't know what he'll do when it's sold.
They open daily except for Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you want to call in your order ahead of time the number is 947-6448.

Oh, my goodness. Talk about a "hole in the wall" kind of place. The best kind! Their prices are great. You find the neatest kinds of places!!
I know, Betty, while I was in there I was thinking to myself, "I wonder if I've ever been in a more hole-in-the-waller place than this."
I've been there !! I used to work right across the street from there in 1973 "Bingo" Ramen Shop, long long gone, they were ahead of their time, it was the very first ramen shop in Honolulu. I got to make all the ramen and gyoza pi, I was the only English speaking personn in the kitchen, learned a lot. The only things I've tried here are the Chinese dishes, coz I thought if the cook is Chinese, must be good and I was right !
I love Kalakaua's food. Right now I'm indulging in the ever so popular beef tomato. Although the place isn't very clean (the tables are sticky..), the food is fantastic.
I love this place. Their food is absolutely delicious. It may be a little dirty, but the food makes you forget about that. And the prices are unbelievable. I always look forward to Kalakaua's.
Rebecca, I agree, not the best ambience, but the food is ono and cheap.
omg kalakaua plate lunch! that place is long gone :(
