Hand-sewn Owl

Been home sick the last few days so I spent my idle time making a few owls. Isn't it cute? Sweetie found something similar at the swap meet, and she sent me a photo so that I could copy it.

After making a few oddly shaped owls, this is the pattern I'm now using. I tried sewing with the machine at first, but it's so small that hand sewing seems to work the best.

I'm not really sure what I'm gonna do with the owls . . . charms? mobile?

Camera Neck Strap

I bought this camera back in October to use on my trip to Japan.

FullSizeRender

It didn't come with a neck strap, just the wrist strap below.  I'd been wanting to get a lightweight neck strap, but haven't been able to find one to my liking. Mostly the straps are too big and bulky for my tiny camera.

While searching online once again last week, I discovered this video where a guy teaches you how to make an adjustable paracord lanyard. It looked perfect, so I decided to give it a try.

I went to Ben Franklin and bought this paracord for $4.

I think it'll work out fine!

Flood

Our house got flooded yesterday.  Wendell's gonna go buy another pump to replace the small vintage one that we have. Besides worrying about the damage to our floor, I was scared that we were gonna get electrocuted.

Wendell's Beer-Battered Fish

I liked this fish dish that Wendell made. He served it with some tartar sauce. The recipe is from here

IMG_6804

INGREDIENTS

    • 2 quarts vegetable oil ( for frying)
    • 8 (4 ounce) cod fish fillets
    • salt and pepper
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
    • 2 tablespoons paprika
    • 2 teaspoons salt
    • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • 1 (12 ounce) bottles beer

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  2. Rinse fish, pat dry, and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Combine flour, garlic powder, paprika, 2 teaspoons salt, and 2 teaspoons pepper. Stir egg into dry ingredients.
  4. Gradually mix in one beer until a thin batter is formed.
  5. You should be able to see the fish through the batter after it has been dipped.
  6. Dip fish fillets into the batter, then drop one at a time into hot oil.
  7. Fry fish, turning once, until both sides are golden brown.
  8. Drain on paper towels, and serve warm.

Anchor Hocking Measuring Glass

My sister Didi pointed this measuring glass out to me while we were at the swap meet awhile back. She said, "It's an Anchor Hocking!" Only an avid cook could get excited about such a thing. Me? I was only mildly impressed.

IMG_6044

But I got it anyway because it seemed like it might be useful and would only take up minimal space in my cupboard.

Boy, did it come in handy on Super Bowl Sunday when Landon asked me to make a sextuple recipe of  V's So Damn Ono Tofu Sauce

12 teaspoons of sesame oil?  No problem.
IMG_6050

18 tablespoons of shoyu? Easy!
IMG_6051

And it has milliliter measurements too!

Thanks for the tip, Didi!

My Vintage Stanley Yankee Push Drill

I scored this vintage hand drill for free this past weekend, and since I have nothing else to blog about, here you are . . .

I got the following information online:

First designed and manufactured by North Brothers, Stanley continued the manufacture of this push drill after purchasing North Brothers in the 1940's until about 15 years ago. It was made of chrome-plated solid brass and beautifully finished.

Using the push drill is simple. You install a bit in the end and push. When you push down the bit digs in and when your hand comes up, the bit spins in reverse and helps clear chips (or dust).

I plan to use it to make pukas in charms or maybe more hangings. I ordered a small vice clamp from Amazon so that I don't end up drilling into my fingers.

I discovered that more bits are stored in the base only after researching online. What a nice surprise.

Here's a video about the drill in case you're interested and are still reading this and neva go on to somebody else's blog already.
