Wendell's Meatloaf

Wendell's made this meatloaf several times already so I thought that I had already blogged about it.  My search came up empty so . . .  yeehaw . . . here it is for you.  The recipe is from What Hawaii Likes to Eat by Muriel Miura and Betty Shimabukuro.

1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup tomato ketchup

Combine all ingredients. Mix thoroughly.  Place in 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until done.

*I have a suspicion that Wendell might've added in some frozen vegetables too, yah?*

AGU Ramen

Earlier this year me and my mom went to AGU Ramen for the first time. We loved it.  You can check out my post here.

Leslie made me all ono for some Hakata-style noodles so a couple of weekends ago I asked Wendell if he wanted to go there.  He had never been there before.

We got there at around 11:30 am and they were already packed.  Our gyoza came pretty quickly.  No, I'm not left-handed, but I wanted to get an "action" hashi shot.

Wendell ordered the Shio Tonkotsu Ramen ($10.75).

I decided on the Shoyu Jidori Ramen ($11.75) which comes with an assari (lightly flavored) broth.  It was a bit too assari for me so when Wendell was done with his ramen, I put whatever was left of my noodles into his bowl and finished eating it with his broth. It was way yummier that way.

Just a Few More

I found a few more photos from Alika and Mindy's wedding that I want to share.

I'm testing out a new image size. Hope it's okay on your computers.

Lunch

Holy Moly!  Sorry, my pictures are HUGE. I selected the wrong size in Flickr. Hope you can view them okay.

This was my lunch the other day.  I wen drag out my folding table so that I could take advantage of the window light.

Here's the salad before I put on the dressing. I like to put strawberries into my salad.  There's also turkey, salami, Havarti cheese and a cranberry/walnut topping.
IMG_3933

This is the dressing that I added on after taking the picture.
IMG_3939

And here's the topping.  I think it's from Safeway.
IMG_3941

Here's the iced coffee.  I got it at Foodland. My receipt says $6.99, but that seems expensive. I thought it was on sale, but maybe it wasn't.

And here's leftover Cauliflower Soup and Puff Paratha.

From Keeaumoku Market

I went to Keeaumoku Super Market after work yesterday.  I checked out the soybeans.  Was so expensive.  They were at least $2 or $3 a bag, and the bags were so small I'd probably need a bunch of um to make tofu.  The soy milk was expensive too . . . around $6.  So using either method . . . from scratch or using soy milk . . . even if my tofu came out super ono, it just wouldn't be worth it.

The Japanese cucumbers, on the other hand, were cheap. They were 39 cents a pound.  This bunch cost me 98 cents! I'm thinking maybe should go back and get some more.
IMG_4081

I'm gonna make cucumber kim chee. If you want my "recipe" you can find it here.
IMG_4104

This was also cheap.  One bag for 79 cents!
IMG_4077

Somehow my photo makes the chestnut look bigger than it actually is.  But still, it's good.
IMG_4111

I bought Rainier cherries too.  $5.99/pound.  My prepackaged bag cost me $11.08.  They're sweet and crisp . . . just how I like um.

A Man and His Hoe

The following is an excerpt from a blog called A Man and His Hoe.  The eggs shown below are from hens that are raised by a man who believes that every chick deserves a mother.  He says that this nuturing environment is the reason that his eggs are "extra creamy and buttery"!  Wouldja believe I found the site not by googling "farm-fresh eggs" but by googling "how to make tofu"!!!  You can find his tofu-making instructions here.

Unlike most egg sellers who, for reasons I have yet to understand, don’t want you to know how old their eggs are, each of my eggs has the day it was laid, so you’ll always know how fresh the eggs are. Some eggs even have the name of the hen which laid the egg. You’ll never find that in your supermarket carton of eggs.

Here are the labels on the inside of a carton of a man and his hoe eggs®.

My Tofu Sauce

My sauce for my tofu kinda failed.  This is what happened.  I looked online for ideas and I kinda made up this recipe.  I put 1/2 cup mirin, 1/4 cup sake and 1/4 cup shoyu into a small pot.

IMG_4050

My plan was to simmer it on low for 25 minutes . . . that's what one of the recipes said to do. Only thing, after 25 minutes the sauce still looked too thin and watery.  I shoulda stopped there but I didn't.
IMG_4024

I left it on the stove for just a little bit more . . . and it got too thick.  You know what though?  Tasted good.
IMG_4033

Now I feel like I wanna try to make my own tofu.  Have you tried before?

Yesterday's Evening Sky

Since I'm lacking in the blog material department lately I decided to take a picture of yesterday's sky.  This is actually five side-by-side photos stitched together and fussed around with in Photoshop.
