Wendell's Seared Ahi

I think I have to stop saying that I don't really care for fish 'cause Wendell keeps making these ono fish dishes . . . and this one was raw inside . . . and I still liked it!

He said he just coated the fish with garlic salt and this Shichimi Togarashi spice. He then quickly fried the fish on all sides just enough to still keep the inside raw.

Koko Crater Botanical Garden

After our kite-flying excursion Erick wanted to check out the Koko Crater Botanical Garden which was nearby. He was also hungry so we stopped off at the Queen's Beach Restaurant at the Hawaii Kai Golf Course first.

Erick had the Loco Moco. He said it was really good.
I had the saimin with gyoza. I was surprised when it came to see that the gyoza was fried! I was also surprised that it was really ono. The broth was very tasty and it had that curly-kine noodles that I like. It was kinda cheap too. Our total bill was about 15 bucks.
When we got out of the restaurant we were shocked to see that it had rained. Here's a shot of some water drops on a glass tabletop. I could've stayed there for days trying to get a good picture, but I was embarrassed by the golfers watching me so I just took two quick shots.
The garden was pretty colorless compared to the last time I was there, so all I got were these prehistoric looking plants.
At least there was this peacock at the entrance. He had the grandest plumage I've ever seen.

Lunch with Sue

Sue is one of my favorite people in the whole world. I used to work with her back in the day when I was a hairdresser. She is the one who introduced me to Wendell. Sue is the most glamorous, stylish person I know. I, on the other hand, am the most grungy I-don't-care-how-I-look person I know. We must make an odd-looking pair when we're together. What I love the most about Sue is her honesty and openness. I love, love, love the animinated way in which she converses . . . much like me . . . and I have a blast just listening to her talk.

Sue, if you get your computer to work and you're reading this, thanks for the treat today. I will color my hair soon, but I will not turn in my camera backpack for a real purse. Love you.

We had lunch at Macaroni Grill. As soon as we got to our table Sheldon, our waiter, wrote his name on the "tablecloth" and poured out some oil and herbs for us to dip our bread into. It was kinda dark so the quality of these pictures is poor (my excuse).
Here's Sheldon.
Sue's nails are always, always beautifully manicured.
I had a Strawberry Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing.
For dessert we shared this Lemon Passion Souffle . . . very yummy.

Acronyma

For those of us who are acronym challenged, especially my sister Didi who didn't know what ROFLMAO meant: Acronyma

My Try at Dduk-Gook

The other day, I tried to make my own dduk-gook following Julie's recipe. You can also get some tips from this Maangchi video.Soak the rice cake slices in water for about half hour.
I got this thinly sliced beef from Shirokiya. It was $6 per pound.
Season beef with sesame oil, salt, pepper, green onion, and garlic.
Spray some PAM or put sesame oil in pot to cook prepared beef
Pour water into the pot, boil, season with salt or soy sauce. Put sliced rice cake, cook until it's tender. Pour beaten egg into soup. Garnish with prepared seaweed and thinly sliced green onion. It tasted good, but Julie's was better.

Two-Wheel Scooter

My sister Sweetie wrote the following. Charles is her son.

47-year-old moms have no business riding their 10-year-old son's scooter at full speed. I was on my way to the beach to meet the in-laws for a swim at Ala Moana beach. I get out of my drive way and safely made it across the intersection. I pushed as hard as I could, one, two, three...... to find the front of the scooter finding its way into a 8-inch pot hole and me flying 6 ft into the air to land on my chin, nose, elbow and knees. I lay there for 10 long seconds before a car pulls up and a man gets out of his car to ask me if I'm ok. I slowly get up and say give me a few minutes, I'll be ok. He says then you best get over to the sidewalk. Gee thanks dude. I taste blood in my mouth and I'm starting to sweat. I have a hole in my palm and my toe feels like its gonna fall off. My elbow is all scratched up and my knees hurt. I wonder if I busted my nose 'cause I heard what I thought was cartilage crunching, but it must have been the asphalt grinding under my chin; my nose hurts but it's still in one piece. The guy drives up and stops ... I tell him I have a phone and will call someone.

I call Charles and tell him I've fallen and if he could come and pick me up off the sidewalk. He had bandages, neosporin and a hand cleanser ready for me. He supported me all the way home.

Next time, I better take the bike. I think my face will be bruised tomorrow; good thing I took the day off. What was I thinking.
