Wendell's Beef Tomato
Wendell made this ono beef tomato by following the recipe in Hawaii's Best Local Dishes by Jean Watanabe Hee.
1 pound beef, thinly sliced
1 onion, wedged
2 stalks celery, cut diagonally in thick slices
2 green peppers, wedged
1 to 2 tomatoes, wedged
2 stalks green onion, cut in 1 1/2 inch lengths
pinch of salt
Oil for frying
Marinade:
1-inch piece fresh ginger, crushed
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp sugar
2 tbs shoyu
1 tbs sherry
pinch of pepper
1 tbs cornstarch
1 tbs oil
Gravy:
1 tbs cornstarch
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp shoyu
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbs catsup
Soak beef slices in marinade for 15 to 20 minutes. Heat 2 tsp oil in pan and stir-fry round onion, celery and bell pepper for 2 minutes. Season with salt to your taste. Add tomatoes. Remove from pan.
Heat 2 tsp oil in the same pan and saute beef until medium rare. Remove garlic and ginger. Add the stir-fried vegetables, green onion and gravy. Bring to quick boil; turn heat off.

I LOVE Beef Tomato! The last time I had good kind was in Pearl City - at Kapiolani Coffee Shop. The worst one that I ever had (and I ordered it twice!) was from Sekiya's. They serve it in a nice big bowl but the taste is quite horrible - I think they use the shrimpy saimin soup base which creates chaos, imo.
I like try Wendell's!
j: one of my fave dishes...what kinda beef did you use? mahalo! -N
Awesome! Yummers again! Next time try some orange bell peppers. They have a much sweeter taste than the green. I love the Red bell peppers too. I use them all the time when I make my home made tacos. Or whatever meat dish I am making.
I also love Red Onions instead of the regular yellow onions. The Red have a sweeter taste than the yellow, and a good kick at the end. It's like a spark in your mouth! And they don't even burn your eyes!
yummy!
Aunty, I do love Sekiya's saimin shiru, but yah, it would be bad in a Beef Tomato. Funny how you ordered it twice. I've done that myself . . . forget and order something junk again.
N, Wendell doesn't remember what type of beef he bought. He actually made it awhile back.
Mark, I hope I remember your tip on Red Onions next time I cook myself. I hate crying while chopping. LOL!
It was, Kat!!
I'm serious Jalna.....the Red Onions will never burn your eyes. And they are so sweet with a good kick at the end. You will love them! And you will never go back to Yellow Onions! Seriously! I have not bought one damn yellow onion in over 20 years! ; ) They Totally Suck!
I hate those things! .....hehe!
And the experts say, the more color in your vegetables, the more healthy for you!
Buy Red Onions Tomorrow and get started! ; )
And show me a new Red Onion Masterpiece! ..... ; )
