We get a lot of scammers who call us on our home phone. They always ask for my father-in-law. He's in his 90's and they wanna rip him off. The irony is that my father-in-law doesn't even answer the phone anymore 'cause he's hard of hearing. I don't answer the phone either 'cause I don't wanna deal with them. I just let the recorder pick up the calls. But Wendell? The scammers don't phase him at all. Here's a recent conversation.
Scammer: May I speak to Joseph please.
Wendell: Speaking.
Scammer: Joseph, I'm calling to let you know that you just won $1,000,000 and . . .
Wendell: I know! I just got the check. Thank you!
Wendell hangs up.
Scammer calls back.
Scammer: May I speak to Joseph please.
Wendell: Speaking.
Scammer: Joseph, I'm calling to let you know that you just won . . .
Wendell: I told you. I know!! I got the check and I bought a house, two cars and a boat. Thank you!
Wendell hangs up.
Scammer doesn't call back.
And here's another conversation:
Scammer: May I speak to Joseph please.
Wendell : What?
Scammer: May I speak to Joseph please.
Wendell: Speaking.
Scammer: Joseph, I'm calling to inform you . . .
Wendell: What? What are you trying to say?
Scammer: Joseph, I'm calling to inform you . . .
Wendell: What? Bruddah, your accent . . . I can't understand anything you're saying. Don't call here anymore.
Wendell hangs up.
Scammer doesn't call back.

Too funny. I tell them to "hold on" and leave the phone connected. That way they have to pay more for long distant charges. Make them pay and they don't call back.

Have you tried placing your number on the "National No call List".
Might help if you need to file a complaint.
I forgot about that list, Anon. Yeah I did put our number on it awhile back. These guys are foreign though with no scruples. One guy is definitely Jamaican and he is so whacko.

We use to get these kind of calls all the time...now the ringer is off on our phone...we don't answer it at all...the message on the answering machine says the phone is not answered. Don't really know why Gerry keeps it since we use our cell phones all the time.

Betty, we hardly use the land-line too, but Wendell's dad is retired from Hawaiian Tel so we get the service for free.

omg! that is hilarious! I am usually rude and just say, not interested! We cut our land line recently and I was sooooooooooo MAD when a scammer called my cell phone at 3:30am to tell me I qualified for a mortgage thing. I was steaming!
