Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk 2010

Leslie, Susie and I participated in Scott Kelby's WORLDWIDE Photowalk yesterday. Tens of thousands of us gathered in hundreds of cities across the world for a couple of hours in hopes of getting a prize-winning photo! Make sure to check out Leslie's Pics on her blog.

We met at 5:00 p.m. in front of the Honolulu Zoo for an after-hours guided zoo tour which ran from 5:30 to 7:30. Ummm . . . Where's Leslie?

While waiting for everyone to gather we goofed around in front of the zoo murals.

Here is awesome photographer and super dad Joel Cosseboom who I met two years ago at a birthday party. He is the one who taught me about sock monsters! Joel is very innovative and is always experimenting with new (and old) approaches to photography. He had three tilt-shift lenses with him yesterday! I absolutely love his work. Check out Joel's awesome photos on Flickr.

Here is one of the few photos that I took that actually has animals in it. Do you see the lemurs and the ducks?

Higashi Hongwanji Bon Dance 2010

Higashi Hongwanji's bon dances hold a very special meaning to me. Erick explains it best in the following e-mail that he sent out to a bunch of us earlier this week:

This weekend is a cute little bon dance at Higashi Hongwanji on N.Kuakini St. I remember this bon dance fondly because this is where I met Jalna and her buddy Susie. How can I forget this chance encounter. It was a dark, rainy night and this girl with her new Canon 40D muscled me out of my small one person rain shelter. She said something about she didn't want her camera to get wet. I got to know her while I stood in the rain with my camera in a plastic bag. Ha,ha, an image to remember forever!

Our Mailman Update

Check out my update on "Our Mailman" two posts down.

Jane's Fountain

Before going to the bon dance at Higashi Hongwanji last night, me and Susie went to grab a bite to eat at Jane's Fountain on Liliha Street. Erick said that Jane's Fountain's been around since he was a kid, a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago.

It's 2 songs for 25 cents. I chose Onna no Asa and Kokoni Sachi Ari. I sooooooooo old too yeah!

They don't bring a menu to your table. You just read what's on the walls.

Me and Susie both had a small wun tun min and a bar-b-q stick. I liked the wun tun min . . . the shiru was good . Beware of the hot mustard that comes with it . . . it's way, way too hot. The bar-b-q stick wasn't that great . . . just okay.

I was so surprised when the waitress actually used the old cash register that I had noticed earlier!

Our Mailman

I've been working at Y & M for the past 28 years, and for about 25 of those years our mailman was Paul. He was the best mailman, always so pleasant, taking the time to chat a bit as we exchanged mail and little tidbits of our lives. He was a single guy for the longest time, so when he announced one day long ago that he was getting married I was so happy for him. His new wife had a daughter from a previous marriage and Paul adored her. She grew up and eventually moved to the mainland, and even though Paul's marriage didn't last he made sure he still kept in touch with his stepdaughter. I think one of his proudest moments was when he got to give her away at her wedding. Paul retired a few years ago. He was to me still a bit too young to be retiring, but he said that he had put in enough years and now needed to take care of his mom. I was so sad.

In the years since he's been gone we've had a succession of different mailmen as well as the installation of a mail box thing downstairs on the first floor. The mailman now puts our mail into our designated locked box and we slip our outgoing mail into these slotted receptacles. It works out okay except on those days about once a week when we send out our boxful of billing. It won't fit. On those days, we would leave a little note asking the mailman to please come upstairs to the second floor to pick up our outgoing mail.

We got a new mailman today. He said that if we want him to come upstairs to pick up our mail we have to go online and request it the day before we want mail picked up. Can you believe that? So I went online and got to USPS. It said that I needed to create an account so I did. I then found my way to "Scheduled Pickups" where it said that I can schedule pickups for the next three months. Our heavy mailing days vary so I chose Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It only allowed me to select days for the next two months (not three). But I figured that's okay. I just gotta request it every two months . . . better than daily.

So I made it past "Schedule Pickup" and was now into "Package Detail". It said "Package quantity is required" - I dunno . . . 200, 300? Then "Package weight is required" - I dunno . . . 1 ounce x 200, 300? Then "Pickups must contain at least one Overnight Guaranteed, 2-3 Day or International Package" - I got none of the above. So now what?

I miss Paul.

7/24/10 update: I talked to the mailman and told him that I tried to go online to schedule the pickups but wasn't successful. I also mentioned how it was a pain in the butt to do. He said he'll come upstairs to pick up and drop off our mail everyday. Nice yeah!!

I wanted to get him something for his kindness so I called Dale at Taro Ko to order some chips. Dale said, "I no more taro . . . maybe in September. I'll call you if I get." I said, "So what you doing?" He said, "Sweet potato." Unfortunately, the sweet potato chips are not as good as the taro chips. I hope he calls me soon. I wanna give the mailman about 5 bags . . . after all, he gotta deliver um too!

Kilani Bakery Brownies

I never heard of Kilani Bakery in Wahiawa before until coworker Cathy shared some brownies with us the other day. Some ono! It seems they also make good chantilly cakes, lemon meringue pies, eclairs and stick doughnuts too. I guess I'm gonna have to check them out one of these days.

Black Bean Monchong

Monchong? Yup, that's what Wendell said . . . monchong . . . but he said you can use any white fish. He actually used a spareribs recipe, but still it came out really, really good.

IMG_9250

Coat about 2 pounds of cut up monchong in cornstarch and fry in oil. Remove from heat and put onto a steaming dish. Cover with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of rinsed and mashed black beans, 3 cloves minced garlic, 2 tablespoons shoyu and 1 tablespoon sugar. Steam for a few minutes. He didn't give me an exact time . . . he said less than 10, just to get the black bean sauce cooked. Then he added about a 1/2 can of chicken broth thickened with a little cornstarch.
