Me and Les usually never, ever go to the west side of the island, but we had a Jazz Festival event to shoot at Ihilani today so this is where we found ourselves. Guess why we're pulled over to the side of the road.
Guess why this tow truck is pulled up in front of Les' car.
Yup . . . car trouble. We had missed our cutoff and just as Leslie was making a U-turn to go back we heard a big THUD and the car stopped working. It was scary 'cause the cars were blazing by us as we coasted to the side of the road.
Did you know that hybrid cars need to be towed like this? I tried "googling" it, but I can't figure out why.
Update: Reader Lance sent an e-mail to Leslie with an explanation. Thanks Lance!
Les, I don't know if you and Jalna still want to know the reason why your SUV got towed "that way" with the back tires on small wheels when you guys got stalled on the westside. I wrote on Jalna's post to explain why, but was rejected coz I don't have a google account. If the back tires are not put on wheels and the back tires rotate on the road without the SUV running, it will ruin your transmission. The only time the back tires can be on the ground while been towed is if it's been towed a very short distance and about 5 miles/hour. (I think that's what they told me) I'm talking from experience. My 2000 Pathfinder was towed from Don Quixote Waipahu to the UH area on the freeway. Cost was over $2,000 to fix the transmission. Fought with my insurance co for 2-1/2 months. Count your blessing your tow guy knew what he was doing. BTW, love yours and Jalna's site and pictures. lance
Here's Randy, Les' husband to the rescue. So nice yeah! Anyway, I called this post "Grateful" because me and Leslie were so grateful that the car didn't break down on a super busy freeway or at night after the jazz event which got done at 10 pm, or when Leslie was driving alone. We were so grateful that aside from the stress that Les had to go through, everything went fairly smoothly, and although we did miss shooting at the festival, Erick was there to cover for us.

We enjoy the Pickles comic strip by Brian Crane each morning. I guess
because it's geared to seniors like us.
I recently saw this strip that shows Earl (...

yipes! good thing you guys didn't get into an accident or something. I've heard that sometimes hybrids just die, someone had that happen as they were in the middle of an intersection...thank goodness you guys were okay.
OHMYGOD WE'RE GONNA DIE! WE'RE GONNA DIE! WHERE'S THE STUPID HAZARD BUTTON???!!?! I wonder if the guy gonna stick around till Randy shows up...I think I need to make a deposit at the bank today, got a deposit slip I can borrow?
Next time we're catching the bus.
That's true Kat . . . another thing to be grateful for!
Hahahahaha. . . so funny Les!
Oh...how scary...and to be on the west side too. Hope Les's car can be fixed. Yup, you're right, it could have been so much more than it was. Glad you two are ok.
Yeah Betty, it was scary. I'm so glad I was with Les and she wasn't alone.
yeah; tank goodness wazn't so bad. wen u fine out about da special way u gatta tow da bugga, let me no!
Hmm...I wanna know why you gotta tow like that. Must be something like the back wheels are connected to the electric motor and you cannot move them without the system on or else you gonna blow up the battery. Haha. So curious!!
For sure tank goodness, Rand! There was stuff on the 'net about towing hybrids but I couldn't understand.
I'm curious too, Yosh.
Too bad you folks couldn't make it. The Jazz Festival was absolutely incredible. It was like a rock concert except with Jazz.
I'm so glad you were there to take pictures, Erick!
Wow - what an experience! Grateful that both of you got through that safely. Although I know it was a disappointment not to be able to be there to shoot the Jazz concert. Luckily our Erick - got the shots.
Yeah Celia. My worst nightmare is being stuck in a broken car on the road by myself.
