Wendell's Foot

Drawing class started up again a couple of weeks ago. This past week's homework was to draw feet in various different views.

Here's the bottom of Wendell's foot.

Dawson Volunteers at Lunalilo Home

Volunteers from Dawson, a native Hawaiian company and member of The Hawaiian Native Corporation, a non-profit organization, and their ohana gathered yesterday at Lunalilo Home and collectively worked their butts off making major improvements to the grounds of the facility.

I was pretty much in awe watching all of them working in the blistering heat, but mostly I was amazed at the wahine and the keiki. Talk about kick butt . . . they majorly kicked some butt.

Eggs and Things

After my eye doctor appointment on Wednesday I asked Wendell if we could stop by at Nijiya Market which was nearby. After we parked, I noticed that there was no line outside of Eggs and Things which is very unusual. So we decided to take advantage of the paucity of people and go have a late breakfast/early lunch.

I had a Vegetarian Omelet with mushroom, zucchini, spinach and cheese ($12.00). It came with a choice of rice, potatoes or pancakes. I chose potatoes. It was 3-egg huge and ono, but not sure if I would choose this again. It was a bit runny with the juices from the cooked vegetables.

This is Wendell's Corned Beef Hash and Eggs ($10.00). There were bits of green onion in it, and Wendell said that it was good.

He chose buttermilk pancakes. Sooooo yummy!!

I was so full when we left, even though I took home more than half of my omelet. It musta been from the PANCAKE!  Anyway, we never did go to Nijiya. We just rolled ourselves into the truck and went home.

The Black Guppy

I'm not real sure how old I was when my dad decided to buy an aquarium . . . maybe intermediate-school age . . .  maybe younger. We stocked it with guppies from Palolo Stream. It was a fun project.

But eventually my dad got deployed off to Vietnam, and the care of the fish and the fish tank was left to us kids . . . which means nobody took care of them.

After awhile the aquarium got put outside on the back porch.

The water slowly evaporated until only scattered small pools remained. One day I noticed some movement in one of the pools. It was a black guppy. And it was still alive. I didn't think there were any fish left in the tank. I couldn't believe it.

I put some water in a jar, and I put the fish in it. The fish was so happy. He did loops and circles and probably woulda done a dolphin flip if he could've. For real.

La Tour's Kouign Amann

Wendell brought home three of these from La Tour the other day. It was so, so, so, so ono! It was also so, so, so, so expensive. $4.50 each!!!

We cut them in fourths and ate them one-fourth at a time.

I found this on their Instagram:

latourcafeIt looks like our DAN TAT KOUIGN AMANN is a hit! You voted for our Kouign Amann Flavor of the Month so if you haven't already, come down and get a taste of this creamy Chinese egg tart on our flaky, fresh, French pastries.

Aunty Sally's Blanket

My mom's sister, Aunty Sally, loved to sew patchwork blankets.

My siblings and I were the lucky recipients of quite a few of them.
IMG_9928

Aunty Sally would usually give them to my mom to pass on, and my mom always sealed them in ziplock bags before giving them to us.

One day years ago, Landon asked if he could take a blanket with him on an overnight fishing trip because it was expected to be a very chilly night.  He grabbed one that was still sealed up.

It did turn out to be a cold evening, and unfortunately the blanket turned out to be not a blanket but placemats instead.
