Dragonfly revisits: 6/7/2008

A dragonfly rested in our driveway. It allowed me one shot before it flew off.
It reminded me of another dragonfly that paid us a visit one night three years ago. My family was grieving the loss of our beloved pet dog, Kula. My son, Landon, in particular was having a hard time dealing with his death. Wendell and I were in the living room watching American Idol. Suddenly, there was this funny sound coming from outside the front door. It kinda sounded like rain falling. It stopped. And then it started again. Wendell went to the front door and said, “Oh, it’s a big moth or something.” I went to the door and I saw that it was a dragonfly, and it was big enough to have set off the motion detector light. When I looked, it was just resting there on one of the slippers.

I ran to the bedroom to grab my camera. I ran back and opened the door and was able to get off two shots. I don’t know if it was the flash or what, but the dragonfly suddenly darted up as if awakened and flew straight into the house, flapping and fluttering all around the living room with that strange, loud rustling sound. Me and Wendell (mostly Wendell) started screaming bloody murder, trying to get away from it.

By the time Landon came into the living room to find out what all the commotion was about, the dragonfly had settled down between the sofa and a chair. Landon sat on the chair while I settled into the sofa and we both stared down at it. I told Landon, “I think it’s a sign.” Landon looked closely at the dragonfly, looked up at me and said, “The day after Kula died, while me and dad were golfing there were a lot of dragonflies out there too, but Ma, I don’t see how that’s a sign.” So we both laughed, and I said, “True.”

Then, it dawned on me . . . there was a movie . . . “Dragonfly” with Kevin Costner. I said, “Oh, my God, Landon, there’s this movie, it’s called, Dragonfly, I wonder if it’s the one I’m thinking of.”

Landon and Taryn went to Blockbuster right away, and we watched the movie that night. It’s about a doctor whose wife dies. Her favorite thing was dragonflies. The doctor's scientific mind believed that when you die, you die, and that was it, so he had a hard time dealing with her death. The movie is about her trying to contact him from beyond. I watched the movie in awe . . . not just because of its content, and not just because it was so pertinent, but mostly because a dragonfly actually flew into our house to give us this message. At the end of the movie the doctor says that we need to trust and to have faith. His last line in the movie is, “It’s belief that gets us there.”

A Sign

No, I haven't gotten a sign from Kona. But I'm waiting and hoping.  Mostly because when our other golden retriever, Kula, passed away 15 years ago we totally got a sign from him.

It came in the form of a dragonfly.  You can check out the story here

So, I've been talking to Kona. I say, "Kona, no pressure, but Kula sent us a dragonfly."

Weeds in the Backyard

A dragonfly lingered over the backyard for a really long time as I watched through the bedroom window this morning.  I always think that dragonflies have a message for me so although my back still HURTS LIKE HELL, I grabbed my camera and macro lens and hobbled outside.  I quickly realized that there was no way I could get a shot of the dragonfly so I focused my lens instead on a shady patch of weeds. The flowers were so cute, only about a 1/2 inch in diameter at most. Maybe when my back gets better I'll drag out my tripod and try to get clearer shots.  Wonder what my message was.

Beading - Part 2

Hope you guys had a good 4th yesterday.  I spent the morning majorly cleaning the house and by the afternoon I was ready for some relaxation.  I couldn't wait to fuss around with some beads.

Do you know what these are?  They're plugs that fit into the earphone puka on an iPhone.  A guy at the swap meet sells them for 3/$1.00.

Sweetie gave me this dragonfly charm awhile back and when I got my iPhone, I attached it to one of the plugs so that I could decorate my phone with it.  Cute yah!
IMG_3344

The other day I took some of my beads to work and asked Noreen to pick out a few.  I made this for her with um.
IMG_3349

When I attached it to my phone I realized that I preferred it hanging the opposite way, so I switched it around a bit.
IMG_3475

I made this one too.  Came out so sweet.
IMG_3393

I wanna make more now.  Unfortunately the guy that sells the plugs said that he is gonna be away in Asia for a month. I guess I can attach whatever I make to the plugs later on.

I'm working on this bracelet now. I might hang something on the bottom of the pewter charms . . . not sure.

So relaxing and good fun making these.  I need more beads now.  Swap meeeeeeeet this weekend!!

Coliro Pearl Watercolor Paint

I'd been wanting to try the Coliro pearlescent paints for awhile after hearing recommendations on YouTube, but at $25 for a 6-color set I thought it was just too expensive.

The other day I noticed this 12-color set on Amazon for the same price so I decided to take the plunge.

Here's a test swatch that I did.  Each pan is tinier than I expected which probably accounts for the "deal" price, but a little does go a long way. There is good coverage, and it's very shimmery.  I like it a lot.  I'm thinking of maybe doing a bunch of dragonfly greeting cards with it.

Cookbook/Brownie Mix Drawing

Wendell woke up early this morning, so I didn't have to wake him. I already had the names ready since last night.

IMG_4991

Isn't the morning light coming from the left so nice?!
IMG_4981

Notice the light outlining my fingers?
IMG_4983

Okay, never mind the light already . . .
IMG_4985

Look the dragonfly . . . . can you see the name?
IMG_4987

It's . . . F . . .
IMG_4988

Fay!!! Sorry Fawn . . . so close . . .

Bee in the House

This bee flew into our house a few days ago.

You shoulda seen me, Aunty and Kona trying to get away from it. We eventually kinda just hid and let it fly around the house.  When the buzzing stopped, I went to look for it.
IMG_8520

I saw it at the living room window.  When the timing was right I slammed the window shut, so that the bee became trapped between the glass and the screen.  Then I went outside to try and pry open the screen, but I couldn't loosen it.
IMG_8516

So I waited for Landon to come home from work, and asked him to do it.
IMG_8541

After a bit of nudging and pounding he was able to open the screen.
IMG_8544

And the bee was free!!  Wouldja believe the bee flew into the house again this morning!  It was early and still dark, so I turned off the light in the house and turned on the outside light.  The bee flew straight out the door.

The bee reminded me of the time in 2005 when a dragonfly flew into our house with a special message.  I wrote about it here.
