For New Year's Day celebration at my house we had the traditional New Year's Day Pizza! Whaaa?? You guys don't have pizza on New Year's Day?? Well, we always look forward to brother-in-law Glenn's homemade pizza so it was unanimously voted that that's what we were gonna have. Hooo hoo!
There's a cool story behind Glenn's shirt, and I'm probably gonna screw it up 'cause I vaguely remember that the story involves a couple of visits, but anyway here's my version. Glenn was in Washington by himself when he decided to catch a baseball game. It was a Los Nationals(?) Latin Appreciation Game so he got in for $5. While at the game he saw a guy wearing a Hilo Vulcans t-shirt and Glenn commented on the shirt. The guy turned out to be affiliated with Handly(?) Orchid Isle Motors. After the game the guy invited Glenn to join them for grinds at Good Stuff Eatery where Obama Burgers are made. Glenn saw Chef Spike Mendelsohn. (OMG, I thought he was some old dude. I just googled him and he's a handsome young guy.) Glenn commented to Chef that he liked the shirt he was wearing. So guess what happened? Chef stopped what he was doing, walked to a back room and brought a shirt back for Glenn!! How cool izthat?
Glenn uses provolone and smoked provolone cheese which he grinds(?), minces(?), cuts(?) into small little bitty pieces. Here's the first pizza. It's a Pepperoni Pizza.
Yumm!!!
Next is Sausage with Oyster Mushroom.
Ooooohhhhhhh!!!
Combination Pizza. He used sun-dried something(can't read my notes) olives.
Shrimp Pesto with Artichoke Hearts
OMGAAAAWWWDDDD!!!!
Another slightly different version of the Shrimp Pesto Pizza.
Pepperoni with Onion and Bell Pepper. Glenn ended up making 15 PIZZAS!!! Thank you soooooo much Glenn!!!!
We totally, totally enjoyed every single one of um.
Here's Kona who insisted on being in on the action.
Geri made her onolicious, best eva Ozoni. Her recipe is here.
We didn't have any leftover this year!
Diem's aunty made a corn dish. It had dried shrimp in it!!
Teren deep fried some tako coated with cornstarch and cornmeal.
Geri microwaved(!!) some oysters.
She put some of this on it. I don't normally eat oysters, but I had to try. It was good!!
Happy New Year from the little ones.
Have you ever heard of Rayu? My family is totally hooked on the stuff since I brought back a jar from Japan. It's a chili-infused sesame-based condiment packed with minced chunks of fried onion and garlic. It is so, so ono on rice and tofu. I even put a spoonful into my ramen.
This is the jar that I brought home. I looked but couldn't find it here.
I found this at Marukai. It's very similar.
It's on sale at Marukai right now, from today until 1/7. It's $5.77. I think normally it's $8 something. If you go to Marukai, pick up two bottles . . . trust me . . . you won't regret it.
It is absolutely the bomb on tofu.
Since I've been so into all things Japanese lately, I also bought this while I was at Marukai. It's Yuasa shoyu. I love it. I put a little of it on the above tofu. It's not salty as I expected, but just flavorful. It's normally around $12, but was on sale for $9. Expensive yah! I thought so too, but I think that once in awhile you just gotta treat yourself. According to the long, long, long, long historical account I found here at the SoyInfo Center, shoyu making in the Yuasa region dates back to the 1600s.
If you wanna try your hand at making your own rayu, I found a recipe here. The picture looks good!
Here's another dish that Wendell made using a recipe from his new cookbook, Everyday Harumi. The recipe actually includes bok choy which you stir-fry first and season with salt and pepper. It's served on the side, so I didn't realize that it was part of the dish and I never took a picture of it. Too late now . . . we ate um all up.
2 lbs. pork shoulder
2 tbs. grated ginger
2/3 c. shoyu
1/2 c. mirin
vegetable oil for frying
Slice the pork as thinly as possible. Wrap slices in plastic wrap and tenderize by hitting with rolling pin.
Blend shoyu and mirin; add grated ginger.
Dip pork into the shoyu mixture and fry in vegetable oil.
Happy New Year everybody!! Me and Kona zonked out early last night. Kona was tranquilized. Me, I'm just old. My family is coming over to my house soon and I still gotta clean house, but I wanted to post these pictures first. So I'm gonna do this fast kine. Me and Sweetie went to Kam Swap Meet on Saturday and Didi joined us both on Sunday to Aloha Swap Meet.
I'm gonna start with Kam. I bought a bag of beads for $10 from a guy that is there every week. He's the same guy that I got my $5 All-Clad pot from. These millefiore beads caught my eye and were mixed with a bunch of other beads. What I didn't know until I got home and did some research on um is that they're African trade beads which were used by the Europeans and Africans as currency in exchange for goods, services and SLAVES. These particular beads are not as old and valuable as most of the ones shown in my link, but I still think they're cool.
Sweetie got this awesome wooden vase for only $5!!
Isn't it beautiful?!
It's made by Jerry Crowe of Unique Turnings. The info on the website says that his creations usually go for $125 to $600!! Score yah!!
And now for the regular stuff. Don't know how much these were selling for, but me and Sweetie got a kick out of um. We didn't buy either of um 'cause we're pretty happy as it is and that sex thing is highly overrated.
My bird house still hasn't attracted any birds, but Sweetie got birds that come to her lanai every morning and are so noisy that they wake her up. I bought this for her. It was $1. I think it blows up into a ball and will scare away the birds.
Sweetie got this for $2.
This cute frame was $1.
I bought this puzzle and the next one for my nephew Charles. They were $1 each.
Sweetie bought this frame for 75 cents.
These chopsticks were 50 cents. Wonder what it says.
When we first arrived this was $2. I didn't wanna spend that much. On our way out it was still on the seller's table, so Sweetie asked if we could have it for $1. The seller said yes. Good thing it was only $1. It's so boring.
I bought this sign for $1. Funny yah!
On Sunday we went to Aloha Swap Meet. We were actually on our way out when Sweetie noticed . . . guess what. A guy selling African trade beads!!! And next to the trade beads were some marbles!!!! I was soooo excited and so entranced that I forgot to take any pictures of his stuff. Most of his marbles were over $100, but this one was $20 so I bought it. It's a handmade German latticinio. I loooooooove it. The "ding" on the top is called a pontil mark. Its where the glass was cut off from the main piece.
Aiyaiyai. I gotta go clean house. Okay, so fast kine. Sweetie bought this malachite piece for $1.
I think these guys work for Aloha Swap Meet. They go around setting up tents that sellers pay extra for. They're gathered here buying $1 spam musubis.
Nate, a pastry artist was selling Red Velvet stuff. $4 for six small slices, $5 for four cupcakes with cream cheese icing and $4 for red velvet cookies.
Here's Nate.
Sweetie is into mosaic stuff. She got this book for $1.
Margaret is stepping up her artwork . . . doing them in color now.
Wonder what he's gonna use this for.
I always admire these people with ambition who spend their free time trying to make extra money. I wish I was like that.
We went to U Choice outside of Don Quijote for some of Didi's favorite won ton min. It was really ono.
Oops . . . somebody went spill something.
K. Gotta go. Be back soon.
