A few days ago Wendell and I went to Pioneer Saloon for lunch. I forgot to mention the limited parking on my previous post. Luckily, it doesn't bother Wendell at all and sure enough, he had no problems finding street parking for his big truck.
Wendell got the Tonkatsu ($11). He said it was good.
I got the Deep Fried Calamari Legs ($11). It was just awright. I shoulda got the Butterfish.
Wendell picked up dinner for us from Pioneer Saloon a few days ago. I can't believe that it was 10 years ago that I first blogged about the place. You can check it out here if you like. We ordered four plates and ate them family style. Here they are in order of ono-ness (according to me). Somehow, we ended up with all seafood. The guys said that next time they're getting some MEAT. Me? I'm sticking with the BUTTERFISH. So gooood. Miso Butterfish ($14)
Deep-fried Baby Tako with Spicy Mayo ($11). 50 cents extra for mixed grain and bean rice.
Salmon Katsu ($10). 50 cents extra for shiso/wakame/seaweed rice.
I bought kulolo from Yama's Fish Market yesterday. It was so ono that all that was left this morning was this piece.
So I went back today. I was hoping that they hadn't sold out. I found out that they don't bring it in from Kauai anymore, and for the past couple years have been making their own.
Hoo hoo!! They make a fresh batch every Thursday and Friday. And once in awhile even on Saturdays.
I lost count how many times Landon said, "Oh, this is good!" It's a Mix Don ($10.95) from Sushi Bay in Kapolei. Lan recommends drizzling a little bit of their unagi sauce on top.
This is my favorite bread . . . Dave's Killer Bread . . . 21 Whole Grains and Seeds, organic and thin sliced.
Cofounder Dave Dahl spent 15 years in prison before joining the family's bakery business where he eventually created Dave's Killer Bread. You can read his story here in a Forbes article.
I went there on Thursday at around 10:15 a.m., and there was still a good supply of musubi left, but the sides were pretty much all gone.
As soon as I got into the car I busted open a tuna/mayo, my favorite. I really enjoyed it, but to be honest, it coulda used a tad more salt. Still, I'm so happy that they're open again.
Long story short. I emailed Manabu and told him that I missed his musubi. His response confused me. It seemed that he thought that I missed the QUALITY of HIS musubi, and not that I missed the musubi because the place had closed. So I researched online. Wait. What? They reopened in May? No, not in May? In November? Under new name Mana Musubi? But every time I drove pass before it looked closed . . . still.
Yet, here is the latest Yelp review by Clifton C. dated 12/21/2019: I am so happy Mana Musubi has finally reopened. The musubi is even better tasting than before. I recommend getting here early as they sell out quickly. Their Spam and Egg Musubi is one of my favorites and is the perfect breakfast for me. They open at 6:30am. The Spam & Egg Musubi used to be available at 7:30am. Since their reopening, it's now available at 6:30am. There is a large variety of delicious Musubi available as well as a few side Okazuya items. Service is friendly. It's a nice way to start your morning by stopping here.
So, they're open again? I'll try check it out today. Addendum: Didn't get to go today. Ran out of time. Gotta try anada day.
Time is whizzing by so fast, yah! Sorry for being lazy to post recently. Thanks for sticking around anyway. I wish you all da good things in the coming year. I felt like I had to post some kind of picture, so here's Kona wearing a soft cone to prevent him from scratching a weepy mole by his ear. But I feel sorry for him, so when I'm able to keep an eye on him, I take it off, and if he should start to scratch I go, "no no no".
