My cousins, Gary, Patty and Phyllis and my Uncle Ronald (my dad's brother) are in Japan right now. Gary sent me some videos via iPhone text message. Isn't technology so wonderful!! I asked him if I could share the videos and his commentary with you (well, sorta asked), and he said okay. Thanks Gary!!!
And here's Patty's clip of the umbrella dance. Thanks Patty!
The baseball game was totally worth it as the crowds are so lively! Never mind that it's an old stadium, only one level, no private luxury suites. Food is great, they don't gouge you, fans are so into the game. They do this umbrella thing during the 7th inning stretch, and whichever team is batting their fans cheer wildly. This is after the Hiroshima Carp scored to take the lead in the top of the 9th against the home team Yakul Swallows. And the beer girls!!! OMG there are numerous beer girls selling beer in the stands and they sell obscene amounts of beer! Good fun and a great experience. All the red you see in the stands are Hiroshima Carp fans who took the train up. Easily half the stadium were Carp fans then they spend the night in Tokyo. Fans from both sides are great. No cussing, people take their garbage with them. I know Wendell would enjoy this.
So neat, and now I want one of those little umbrellas! That shows how the Japanese are so thoughtful, having small umbrellas for this kind of event - can you imagine if people took out their regular umbrellas and did this? Poke da eye of the people behind!
Uncle and our son went to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park a few years ago, first and only time we went to a professional baseball game. It was such an experience - an old old stadium filled with fanatic baseball fans, singing Sweet Caroline, rah rah rah! I remember nothing of the game - just the experience of being there.
I haven't been to Japan in over 30 years - now I want to go again, and maybe check out a baseball game!
We went to a game a few years ago when we went with mama and papa Kuba...it was fun! I'm amazed how those beer girls can handle! They carry little beer kegs on their backs while climbing the steps and pouring beer for all the fans. Talk about a workout!!
One of our dear friends from Japan sent his teenage son to stay with us for 5 weeks during the summer a long time ago. We took him to a Cubs game in Chicago. It was one of the rare times I saw the Cubs actually win. Takashi told us he was surprised at how quiet and subdued the crowd was. Quiet? Subdued? I couldn't understand why he would say that. Now that I see your cousin's video, I can understand better.

True dat, Erick!
Kay, I liked it that the Japanese people who are usually so reserved can come out of their shell and enjoy themselves like that.
I wish I could have seen the videos.
