Can anybody tell me why it is prohibited to hand carry these jellies back from Japan like this? BUT if I put them in a quart-size ziplock bag then it's okay. The bag was unopened at the time.
What is the difference? What makes them being in a ziplock bag okay? I don't get it.

So Didi, did they put your can in a ziplock? Or did you tell them to enjoy it later like Sweetie did with her uni?
That's crazy to me! I can't believe it...I would think it being factory sealed makes it much safer than you throwing it in a ziploc bag. No make sense to me.
When I had a stopover in Japan a few years ago, they confiscated my unopened drink at the gate. I purchased it in the airport!
WAIT! you mean the $30 can of uni AKA hockey puck was not allowed to be brought back? Unfair. Fall down for nothing.
The ziplock bag is see-thru. No can hide "something" from view.
They also took my sister's big bag of miso paste : ( they should warn you ahead of time. So the can of uni was left behind? So sad...
I think it's pressurization in the aircraft or the lack there of in the cargo area things in sealed containers can expand and explode . Not in a dangerous way but an awful mess.
Hence the ziplock.....
I know this bc I used to mail goodies everywhere to friends. Packages of chips,rarely make it and jars of jam popped open.

Ya...it's so stupid. This is why I don't like to fly anymore. Too painful.
One time about ten years ago on a flight from Honolulu to San Diego, they found a tiny little knife in my toilet kit, which I kept in a clear plastic baggy to help them.
Funny thing is....this little tiny knife had passed through inspections for years! It was not just a knife, it had other little goodies in it, like file your nails or whatevea.
I was complimented on the clear baggy, they said they wished everyone did that, but they wanted to take my miniature knife.
So I said give it back to me....I will go to the check out counter and ask them to put it in a little box and check it under the plane.
The guy said....HO...you know the rules.
I arrived in San Diego and picked up my little box with my miniature knife in it. Still got 'EM.
But Jenny, plenty people were buying their bottled drinks once past the TSA inspection, and were allowed to board the plane with um. No make sense that they took yours.
Al, it wasn't the hockey puck uni. This one was in a pouch packed in liquid. It was in a gift wrapped box and Sweetie forgot what was in the box.
But Lance, the TSA guy just put the unopened, factory sealed pouch directly into the ziplock bag. If anything, he obscured it even more.

Anon, I also thought that maybe that was the reason, but then wondered . . . our Transportation Security Administration is not only responsible for our "security" but also for our "messses" too? And no, it wasn't the hockey puck uni.
I'm so, so happy that you still have your miniature knife, Mark. I felt sad when my sister had to give up her uni.
Must be confiscating anything that is liquid or liq like...being it was TSA.
bummers! I brought back so much liquid stuff in my carry on that I forgot I had. I would've been bummed if they took it away!
You're right, Anon. But they let me keep the jellies, as long as I put um in the ziplock bag.

Like with anything I don't think screening is done exactly the same with each agent...it's the randomness that will have you guessing. But we all must realize the reason it's being done.
I totally agree, Anon. But I just wish I could find a reasonable explanation for why my already factory-sealed bag of jellies needed to be in a ziplock bag. Then maybe I could make sense of some of the things that are required or prohibited.
My can was a "pop top lid" just like your jelly that could have "popped open" with the change in elevation ???
Aaaaah . . . pop-top lid . . . maybe that could be it then. . . Didi . . . like Anon said. Maybe they should change their name to TSMA (Transportation Security and Mess Administration.
