I'd been wanting a pizzelle iron f-o-r-e-v-e-r . . . ever since my cousin Renee made some pizzelles and gave them to us for Christmas years and years ago. I never forgot how ono they were . . . kinda like a cross between a waffle cone and yoku moku.
So every once in awhile if I happened to be at a Compleat Kitchen or an Executive Chef I would take a look at their irons. I never did buy one 'cause I couldn't bring myself to spend the bucks. They were expensive . . . like around 50 bucks . . . and what if I only used it once.
Well, guess what I saw at the swap meet this past weekend (same day that I scored the coin purse)? It was on a tarp on the ground, and actually hidden from view by a board that was covering it. When I lifted the board and saw what was underneath it, I softly gasped.
I opened it up and saw that it looked in great shape . . . better than I expected. I put a won't-pay-beyond price in my head (like I usually do). I decided I wouldn't pay more than $10. I looked at the seller and asked, "How much is this?" She looked toward her left and yelled out to a busy-looking woman, "Mom, how much are you selling that pizzelle maker for?" The woman looked at me and said, "Oh . . . I dunno . . . how about $3?" OMG $3!!!!! I acted cool and said, "Oh, okay." But inside I'm screaming, "Holy moly, I got myself a pizzelle iron!"
I just checked Amazon. They have the same thing for $42. You can check it out here. Score yah! Well actually, maybe not "score" yet. I still haven't plugged it in yet.
I also just went looking for some recipes. There are six "best pizzelle" recipes here. It looks like an important ingredient is anise extract or oil. I don't think I've ever used that before. Wonder if it's like vanilla. Wish me luck!

Anon, Saturdays are usually better than Sundays. More clean-out-the-closet sellers are there on Saturdays.
Kevin, that is so funny!
OMG ... you have such good memory!!! It's been many many many years ago when I made pizzelle. I don't recall what I did with my pizzelle iron, however, I remember placing the recipe in the box with the pizzelle maker. If I ever find the box I will forward the recipe to you. My neighbor, who was a home economics teacher shared her recipe with me (it was very ono). You sure got a great deal ... I know I spent more than $3 for my pizzelle iron ... and that was soooo long ago! Happy pizzelle making!!!
My friend Becky makes everyyear for the holidays...traditional way (her husband is full Italian). Her iron is one that you use on the stove..yup...cook, turn over, cook (she makes 250 or more)...the anise oil is really hard to find, but that is what gives it that licorice flavoring, so you can use any extract...
Renee, I think it was before Landon was born, so over 30 years ago, but it was sooooo ono that I never forgot it.
Didi, I found anise extract at Safeway. It was 6 bucks for 1 oz!!
