I'm always looking for good miso yaki butterfish. We like the one at Maguroya best so far but it's been a while since we've had it. Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin was our pricey favorite for tonkatsu but the last time we went there, it was not as great for some reason.
Miso Salmon...yumm......hummm...looks like kosher salt ?? no ?? thinner ? flakier ?
Kay, I never heard of Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin before. Just googled it. Great reviews on Yelp, but I rarely venture into Waikiki unless I have to.
Kosher, Didi? K. Gonna check it out. I think we have a box in the pantry.
I seen those japan salt flakes at Marukai. I don't remember if it was a special item that they bring in when they have those "area" item fairs or it's a regular item.
The best chicken katsu I ever had was at Kim Chee II in Kaimuki - go figure! Moist, plenty chicken in a just right batter, but NO tonkatsu sauce - you just eat 'em plain. I used to like their other entrees but not anymore, maybe my taste buds changed.
The best misoyaki butterfish, imo, is from Okuhara Foods on King Street - you buy it uncooked by the 5 or 10 lb size (keeps going up in price, last time I went it was $11/lb) and you grill, fry, or oven broil. Funky kind of cuts but they said it is like that on purpose so when it cooks it is marinated just right.
For Sweetie and her natto eats, try that place across from Kaimuki High School - Gazen Izakaya. I gotta do a post on that place one of these days. Their natto looked so good and had all kind of tasty stuff with raw egg that even I was tempted. For dessert, the sweet potato tempura ice cream is da bomb, really da bomb! Kinda pricey but yet not. Don't go for the fancy lamb or beef tongue - they try too hard to make it too fancy or tasty. The wait help is very helpful and didn't steer us wrong so next time we listen to them.
I am rather hungry right now - had a dinky lunch and a dinky saimin dinner, but it is too late to eat since I gotta go to sleep soon. I will probably dream of teishokus tonight.
That is my cousin's favorite restaurant. I love their butterfish.
Oooooooh, thanks Lance!! I have a bag of frozen edamame in my freezer just waiting for the flaky salt.
Aunty, Aunty, Aunty! Thanks!! We never tried Gazen Izakaya, but I pass there all the time. I'll pass on all da scoops to my sisters!
Erick, I agree, the butterfish was really good.
I do believe Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin is still in Shirokiya as well ..I pass it in waikiki everyday !! lines
I like Menchanko Tei's katsu too...I think I liked it better than Bairin. No can beat Japan yah!!
Everything look so delicious! I definitely would like to try the place.
I think you would like it, Akemi.
