Wow! They look delicious. I have about 30 flying saucers in my freezer so that when my son comes back home (from Hnl), he can take the goodies back with him (along with some frozen laulau and goteburg sausage). If I can find the Kauai recipe for the flying saucer mix, I'll send it on over to you!

Did you google the history of these sandwiches,its name is from the round handheld mold it's cooked in from the forties.you can buy the replicas still.

@Lorna - Is there still the bakery in Kukui Grove Shopping Center that makes Filipino pastries? I faintly remember they used to make flying saucers too. It's also bon dance season in Kauai - oh flying saucer time and I remember eating Linda's manju (the yellow one with the red dot). Boy do I miss those comfort foods!
I haven't googled the history Anon. But you know what? I suddenly remembered that waaaaaay back I did have some kind of sandwich mold thing with long handles. I gotta go try find um.

Jalna: Okay, here's the Kauai recipe (supposed to be top secret but I guess I'm one of those people who sell secrets to other counties):
1# ground beef or ground turkey
1 pkg. McCormick Sloppy Joe seasoning
1 can tomato paste (the small can)
1 1/4 c. water
chopped onions
buttered bread
American cheese slices
Brown ground beef of turkey in large skillet; drain fat,and stir in seasoning, tomato paste and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Place buttered side of bread against the flying saucer maker. Spoon in mix and a 1/4 of a slice of cheese. Place over heat source and crisp both sides making sure bread doesn't burn.
Mmmm good.
As far as Kauai Bakery, at Kukui Grove Center, yes, it is still there! Their dream cake is to die for!
And yes, to reheat frozen flying saucers, first microwave for about a minute, then put in the toaster oven to crisp the bread.
