Galaxy MMA's Bad Blood - 8/6/2010

Galaxy MMA's Mark Pang gave me a free pass to go shoot at his Bad Blood event yesterday. I tried to focus more on the fighters and the fights this time around. The challenging part was finding the best spots where the lights were the least reflective on the fence that surrounds the cage. Sorry to the people whose views I might have blocked. Thanks Mark . . . I had a great time. When's the next event?

Lobster King Lunch

I finally checked out Lobster King yesterday and picked up some take-out. Like the reviews they've been getting, we also got a mixed bag of reactions to our selections. I'll start with the very good and work my way to the very bad.

Runa totally scored with the Minute Chicken Chow Mein ($8.50). It was very, very ono. I liked the skinny noodles.
IMG_1751

Joy ordered the Vegetable with Iceberg Lettuce Wrap ($7.95). It was also very good.
IMG_1755

I ordered the Won Ton Noodle Soup ($8.00). The won ton was good, and so was the broth. One small-kine complaint . . . isn't Won Ton Noodle Soup supposed to have NOODLES in it???
IMG_1759

Julie said her Beef with Bitter Melon ($9.75!!!!) was veeeeeeery bitter.
IMG_1757

Doesn't this Lunch Plate ($8.50) look good? Wayne gave it a thumbs down. He said it was mostly tasteless and the spareribs was hard.
IMG_1744

When I opened up this Chinese Chicken Salad ($7.95) I actually felt sorry for Leslie. Shouldn't Chinese Chicken Salad have CHICKEN in it?

Erick was at Lobster King when I went to pick up my order. I called him later and asked about his food. They had ordered Lobster with Black Bean, some casserole dish and something else. He said that all three items were really good.

Tysha's Birthday Party - 8/05/2010

Tysha celebrated her birthday today at Champions on Keeaumoku. I don't usually join in on these after-work parties, but since Tysha is one of my favorite coworkers and since it was right up the street, I walked on over and spent a little time with the young-uns.

Galaxy MMA Presents Bad Blood - Friday, August 6, 2010

Remember back in May when I took pictures at my first MMA tournament, Worlds Collide? I was suprised that the sport turned out to be not as brutal as I expected, and I actually enjoyed shooting in the low light conditions.

Well, hopefully, I'll get a chance to shoot again this Friday at Galaxy MMA's Bad Blood event at the Blaisdell Arena. Doors open at 6, show starts at 7.

Landon's Pork Belly without Mochi

One of my favorite things to eat from Palama Market is Pork Belly with Mochi. I blogged about it before here. Actually I usually just eat the mochi and Landon or CQ will eat the pork belly.

Landon made his version of the dish tonight minus the mochi (boooo!) and it tasted really good, almost like Palama Market's.

Landon said he cut up about 2 pounds of pork belly into cubes and boiled it for one hour. Then he sauteed the pork, one large sliced carrot and 2 cut-up bell peppers in some vegetable oil. He added 2 tbsp of the ko chu jang sauce on the left, 1 tbsp from the container in the middle and 1 tbsp from the jar on the right - all that he could find in our 'fridge. I think they're all ko chu jang sauces, but he thinks not. He then added about 1 tbsp of shoyu, 3 tbsp of sugar and finally when almost pau 1 to 2 tbsp sesame oil to taste. He also said that if he could've found the sesame seeds he would've added some in too.

Da Real Pikcha

Shun Wah, this is the unretouched photo for you to see so can tell how sucky I really am. You no need be jellos. I fiddled with the contrast and levels in Photoshop and used the free edge sharpening action I found at mcp actions.

Shot with my 85mm f1.2 at 1600 ISO. Hand held at 1/25, f1.4 . . . just call me Da Rock, thank you.

Palolo Higashi Hongwanji Bon Dance 7-30-2010

Friday after a hard day's work I rushed over to the Palolo Hongwanji bon dance. I told Erick that if I couldn't find parking I would go home. I grew up in Palolo so I know the back streets well and found parking close by. I called Erick and asked where he was . . . he said he was at home eating chili. I guess he didn't have faith in my parking-finding skills. Anyway, being the good buddy that he is, he rushed over . . . whatapal yeah!

I didn't realize until the end of the night that I had a polarizing filter on my 35mm lens, which is like having sunglasses on them . . . so babooze again. Erick said, "What . . . you couldn't tell?" I said, "What . . . no!"

I applied choke contrast and did some major edge sharpening to the first photo and thought it came out so cool. I loooove Photoshop.
