Da $10/lb Kalbi from Keeaumoku Produce

Isn't this a beautiful sight? Especially since it was drizzling, and I wasn't sure I would be able to get the hibachi going.
Isn't this an even more beautiful sight? And it was really good . . . even Wendell said, "Ho, dat was some good meat!" It was very tasty, and mostly it was VERY TENDER. I portioned out half of what I bought and saved the other half for another day.
And here's my usual Lit'l Smokies so as not to waste a good fire.
Except I did waste one Smokie.
As a side dish I decided to make an omelet using the bambucha eggs, also from Keeaumoku Produce. I once called some local government agency (I forget which one) and asked how you can tell when an egg is fresh. The lady said that after you crack it, if the raw egg has body and height to it and is not flattened out, then it's fresh. These eggs were really fresh.
I added this Amano brand imitation crab meat from Foodland.
Here's da omelet. It was okay. Maybe I shoulda added some seasoning. I sometimes think that it's so absurd that ME a non-cook is blogging about the food that I made . . . like I'm actually gonna teach you guys how to cook.

Our Adventures in Japan Blog

Kat and Satoshi just came back from a trip to Palau. Check out Our Adventures in Japan, where Kat did an awesome job documenting the sites, food and culture. Find out about the "sacrifice leaf", fruit bat soup (although they didn't order it) and more about this island nation that has no addresses.

Keeaumoku Produce

Keeaumoku Produce is near my working place on Liona Street (thanks tippy for the spelling correction) across from Maui Divers. It's been there for as long as I can remember, yet a lot of people I know have never even heard of it.
I think they must make really good kim chee 'cause they sell them by the gallon.
This is owner Grace (Seong Hee) Kim. She is so nice.
From way, way back I had heard that this place had the freshest, best eggs, but I never bought any 'cause I wasn't sure how to bring them home on these trays.
Grace offered to pack them in a closed container for me so I bought a dozen jumbo eggs for $2.85.
!!!!!!!!!!
I bought this container of meat jun for $7.00. Had choke pieces and was really, really good . . . very tender. I like this pickled cucumbers. Awhile back I tried to duplicate this with leftover pickles. Some people have said that it's too salty, but I like 'um. This was also $7.00.
They also have this nori that is sooooo ono in chazuke (tea rice). Again $7.00 for a container. Whaaaaaaaat??? I put too much? But it's ono.
I had already paid for my stuff when this young girl came in and asked Grace if she had any marinated kalbi. Grace went to get it so I asked the girl if it was good. She said that her mother had bought some the other day and it was THE BEST. So of course I had to get some also. It comes frozen and is $10 a pound. This container holds 5 pounds (50 bucks!!!). I'll let you know how it turns out.

Tofu with Bittermelon

Wendell doesn't really like bittermelon so I was surprised to find this on the dinner table when I got home from work one day. It was good although I kinda picked mostly the tofu and egg for my plate.

Here's the recipe he used:
1/2 lb. bittermelon
1 block firm tofu, break into pieces
Cut bittermelon into thin slices and sprinkle with salt, let stand for 10 minutes, rinse with water. Brown well-drained tofu pieces, set aside. Stir fry bittermelon in hot oil over high heat and cook until half done (? that's what it says "half" done). Add 1/2 can tuna (that's what the recipe calls for but Wendell used beef). Add fried tofu and beaten eggs. Mix well and sprinkle with salt.

Diana Nguyen on Disgrasian

I think this is funny:

iPhone Voice Command is, Um, Racist!

Caution: She is really good at swearing.

Smoked Beef Brisket from Whole Foods

I had the day off today, so I told Wendell I would make dinner. My plan was to make hash patties. I didn't do that. I bought Smoked Beef Brisket from Whole Foods instead. The problem was that part of my errands today was to go clothes shopping 'cause I don't got no clothes. I HATE shopping for clothes. I am so unstylish, I don't know what to pick, nothing looks good on me, I gotta try them on, and after searching and searching, and going in and out of the dressing rooms, and taking off my clothes and putting on my clothes, I usually end up with nothing. It's exhausting.

Wendell flipped when he saw how much I paid. But hey, it's feeding five people. Landon said it was good but not as good as Uncle Bobo's.

Kris

I took this picture of Kris two years ago. I don't know how long I can keep this picture up 'cause I never asked her permission to post it. Isn't she beautiful?

The Colors of 808 Urban

Jin Doi from U-Choice In

I ran into my friend Sue today while I was at Don Quijote looking for salmon musubi (which was sold out by the way). She mentioned that for lunch she was gonna pick up some jin doi at U-Choice In. She described it as having a pork, mushroom and shrimp filling instead of the usual coconut or an. Sounded interesting so I decided to pick up some to try.

It was a hit back at the office, but waaaaay too oily for me.
