Every once in awhile I would find this fruit in our yard. I never gave it much thought except to kinda wonder where it came from. And then I would throw it in the trash can. A couple of days ago, there were five of them in the yard. I was curious so I finally took one into the kitchen and cut it open.
Some of you probably already knew from the picture, but I was surprised. It was a lilikoi!!! But there IS NO lilikoi plant in my or my neighbors' yard. ????? And yet there were five fruit on the ground.
I went back outside. This time I looked up.
And there they were . . . waaaay up high in my neighbor's mango tree . . . a cluster of lilikoi fruit. BTW, you DO know which neighbor this is, right?
But HOWZDAT HAH!!
I texted a few people and asked them what I should do so that the lilikoi wouldn't go to waste. Mich said that she could try and make some jelly and went online to figure out how to do it. She got back to me and said that she would need about 2 cups of the juice without any of the seeds in it.
Later in the afternoon, two more fruit fell to the ground. Hoo hoo! It's like finding treasure now! I got around 1/2 cup of the juice that I'm saving in the freezer for Mich.
I guess I gotta wait for more to fall to the ground. That's what I read online anyway . . . when they're ripe, they fall to the ground. Too bad for the neighbor . . . they're falling on our side of the fence. Awwww . . .
My Auntie Ida makes some of the best jellies I have ever eaten. So good that she even had some made for President Obama. The amazing thing is she is still VERY active with the church, making jellies & jams & even using the wheelbarrow around her yard at St Stephen's Diocesan Center where she lives. And she will be 102 years old this April. -kawika http://www.generations808.com/am2013d.html
Oh, lilikoi!!! Now I stay so 'ono for lilikoi jelly. My friends and I used to go kakaroach some from da neighbor's place... but I think they didn't want um cuz they never did anything with um.
I know, Lance! I gotta look up how for grow um myself now.
Whoa, Aunty . . . lilikoi cheesecake!!
Hahahaha funny, Anon!! Do they fruit only this time of the year?
You know what, Anon . . . I was wondering where the vines were originating from so I wen peek through the puka in the fence. I saw that the neighbor had constructed a wire structure for the vines to entwine onto. Only thing the vines on the thing they made are all brown and dried out. I dunno if the neighbor even knows that three of the stems wen creep up their mango tree. But anyway, what I wanted to say is that when I wen peep through the fence I saw one cage that had THREE rabbits in um!! I felt bad for um.
What Les??! I neva sound sincere when I said, "Awww"?
Wow, Kawika . . . thanks for the link. Your aunty is amaaaazing!!!
Jalna, if you really can't wait or the fruit collection is going too slow, go up to Aiea Heights State Park, the one with the heiau. It's an easy hike on well kept trails. In fact I think they're now paved. The woods in that area used to be lousy with lilikoi just 10 - 30 feet off trail. They have the gold (like the one's your neighbor has) and the purple ones. Easier to pick too as they'll be growing on the ground instead of you having to climb 20 feet up a tree.
OMG Ainakoa! Thanks! I've never been there but just recently saw some family photos that were taken there so I just so happen wen look up how for get there. Four more fruit fell this afternoon, so production is not too bad. But I am not the most patient person so maybe . . . next time me and my sisters go swap meet, I can shanghai them to go help me pick some.
