Wendell bought this warabi maybe a week or so ago and he kept forgetting about it. He finally made this warabi salad last night. It was so simple yet so ono. He followed the recipe from The Tasty Island blog, although he left out a couple of the ingredients.
He parboiled the cut up warabi and then after cooling added cucumber, tomatoes, ocean salad (he said was expensive - like 9 something a pound), and kamaboko.
He also added a lot of Pietro shoyu dressing. It was very refreshing, and I loved the crunch.
I wonder why they charge so much for seafood salad? I understand its a "Processed " food, its not an actual plant but manufactured. If so youd think it wouldnt be so $$.
Sounds like a great combination. I just recently had some warabi, it was from ethels grill, they serve it along side the tataki sashimi along with beansprouts. I thought it was string beans at first.
I know Anon. I'm wondering the exact same thing. I bought it once on sale at Don Quixote. I forget how much it was, but I remember thinking, "Now that's more like it." I went to Ethel's Grill only once with Wendell. . . mostly 'cause I was curious about some grouchy lady. Turned out she was not too bad. I was disappointed. I was looking for some entertainment. That dish you had sounds wonderful.
I was a tad scared I would be yelled at bc I had to change my order twice, then she tells me to SIT DOWN and wait for my take out . I did that command right away ;) then while trying to get out the door she pulls up in front of me and opened the door and out I went ! They are famous for the tataki sashimi and the garlic sauce. I also had the jpn hamburger and mochiko chicken. Hamburger teeny and okay , didnt get to taste the chicken, but portions were so so. I wasnt expecting much but was happy with the quality and freshness of the food. Their salad dressing is ono. Go back and try the sashimi next time.
Anon, you changed your order twice!! Ho you brave! Makes me chuckle thinking that you sat down right away when she commanded you to "SIT!" Hahahaha. I'll mention to Wendell that we should try go back again.

What is warabi? I've never seen it before...at least I don't think I have. The salad does look very refreshing...something to have on a hot day...
It's a fern shoot Betty. Not sure if it's available all the time, but this batch that Wendell got was really nice.
