I Got a Ticket

I got a ticket for jaywalking yesterday. It was after work while I was walking to our parking structure. Officer Mike Miranda came out of nowhere and totally busted me.

He made small talk while writing up the ticket. He asked me where I worked and what job I did. He opened up about himself saying that he lived in Hawaii Kai and hoped to be retiring soon. I asked him if I could take a picture of him for my blog. He said no.

He seemed nice and all, but I told him that I hoped that I'll never run into him again. He didn't seem offended. In fact, he might've laughed. At any rate, I think I learned my lesson.

Try look at how much the fine is for illegally using your cell phone while driving . . . around $300 to $350!!!  DON'T DO IT!!!

Wow. If he was really nice, he'd have given you a warning, because it's not like you're one of those cocky, know-it-all types who deserve to be ticketed!

There are no parking in the building where you work Jalna? I would have never thought they would ambush you in that area since its not a "hotspot" for jaywalking like in the downtown area.

Oh man Jalna! My husband has a cop friend and when he's out and about as a civilian and driving around and sees people on their cell phone he flashes his badge at them. Sometimes if they are driving crazy he'll pull them over and check on them too, using his shorts and slippers...haha

Ouch! I got one ticket because the police officer said that I didn't yield to a pedestrian on my half of the street. She wasn't on my half but I took the ticket. Had to show up at court - but that is another future blog post.

At court, had one lady who looked all professional and successful and the judge fined her $250 even though the lady said that she was just reaching over to turn off her phone. Right.

Using cell phones while driving is dangerous - told our kids that they better not use them but nowadays everyone is so connected to their phones they lose sense of being in touch with what is actually happening in front of them.

Too bad on the ticket. The stinker could have at least diven you a warning.

I remember in the late 1980's, I was dropping my daughter off at the downtown Honolulu YWCA. It was a 3 min. loading zone. I new I be out before 3 min. because I drop her off every day.

Just ahead of me the parking ticket lady was writing a ticket to the car ahead of me. She had to know I just pulled up. I was back in under 2 mins. And there was standing in front of my car with her ticket book.

I didn't bother to ask her if she was trying to write me a ticket. I just drove off because I was legal.

A week later I got a $25 parking ticket in the mail~ UG!

I was so mad that I mailed them $25 in rolled up pennies with NO Postage on the large envelope!....LOL! And no return address!

I was hoping it would cost them $25 in postage to receive my $25 bucks!.....hehe

I included a very angry letter describing the very unfair incident.

I thought for sure they would write a nasty letter back but I never heard a thing.

OMG! Yet the red light ticket is only $97 and isn't that more dangerous to run a light? Dang when I walk my dogs around the 'hood I jaywalk everywhere avoiding pedestrians, bikers, baby carriages and other dogs. I'd go bankrupt. Just the tough luck of the draw...Once near the on ramp to the on Alexander Street off Punahou, there was a whole buncha cops hidden and I got busted for not making a full and complete stop. Who does that in Hawaii? We do Hollywood stops here, it has not deterred me to make a full stop ever. Sooo sorry to hear that, imagine how many cool swap meet stuff you could buy with dat. :(

Oh goodness... I confess I do jaywalk in my neighborhood, but I'm never letting anybody know where I live because I don't want your officer to find (fine) me. My friend's son DID get a ticket for looking down at his cellphone to change the music at a stop light. I was told that if you're stuck in traffic somewhere and want to quickly use your cellphone, you should turn off your engine first.

$130 for jaywalking? Ouch!!!

Totally red-handed, Mich!

I was thinking that too, Lorna. I was beyond cordial to him.

Really, Kawika . . . the street that I was crossing is behind our building and is a short, quiet one.

Hahahaha, too funny that cop friend, Susan.

Yes, Jenny . . . learned my lesson.

Ditto, Kat!

At least I neva have to go court, Aunty.

Aiyaaaa, Mark . . . no fair.

I thought the same thing too, Anon! $130 for jaywalking?

Dd, it's right across the street from my building.

Wow, Kay. Good to know . . . better not even sneak a look even while stopped.

HOLY CRAP!!!!! i always jaywalk over there!! Is this walking towards the main entrance to the parking structure?? Yikes. Don't show Marshall this. He always scolds me for not using the crosswalk...and I always tease him cause he walks super far to get to the crosswalk! :-O

Ya Jalna! My parking ticket was stink! And the fact that I could drive away before she could write the ticket is proof I was out of there in two minutes! I thought about getting a copy of my signing in my Daughter with the time, and then comparing that to the time on the ticket. I was even going to take pics for a judge to show how close the curb drop off is to the YWCA front door. But I just didn't want to deal with going to court over it.

Yah, Les. I had my rolly thing and didn't want to drag it up the stairs so I was on my way to the entrance on Ahana. I know the name of that street now 'cause IT'S ON DA TICKET. And talk about Marshall always using the crosswalk even if it's far away . . . the crosswalk was less than 20 feet away from where I was jaywalking. Officer Miranda kindly pointed that out to me.

Me too, Mark. The cop said that I could go to court and maybe I'd get a lower fine, but that wouldn't have been worth it for me. Especially since I was totally guilty.

Mark Shelby said...

I think your ticket was nasty Jalna! How come the cop didn't walk out and block traffic for you! Since you were on a mission! ; )

But seriously! Don't they have better things to do for God's sake!

A jaywalker really pays attention when they are walking across the street! The average driver today is texting on their phone or drunk!

When I ride my bike in Pacific Beach I sometimes ride on the sidewalk on Garnet. They have signs that say no riding on the sidewalk. But I do not care. They do not have a designated bike lane on Garnet Avenue! So I do not think they have a right to give me a ticket for riding on the sidewalk. So I refuse to ride on the street with all of the drunks and texting peeps!

I will report back to you if I ever get a sidewalk bike riding ticket. I have my speech already prepared for the lame cop who decides to give me that ticket, and boy he will get an earful. Especially since Pacific Beach is a total biking community. I don't think he would ever want to see me in court! Because I would make him a laughing stock!

Hahahahahaha!! Sounds like you are soooo ready, Mark!
