Sunscreen

Kay of Musings blog recently wrote about Environmental Working Group's compilation of best and worst sunscreens. When I was in my 20's I had a severe allergic reaction when I slathered a friend's favorite sunscreen onto my face. Since then I've been very careful about which sunscreen I use.

This is the sunscreen that I use on my face now. A former coworker gave it to me.  I've also used a Shiseido sunscreen with success. They're both $$$$$, but I only use it on my face so it lasts a long time.

I copied and pasted EWG's Best Sunscreen list below. You can check out their list of worst sunscreens here.  Although there is a Huffington Post article which states that the report is misleading here, I think it's still good to know. Thanks for pointing the way, Kay!

So funny that I printed the bad ones and you printed the good ones. I bought the Bull Frog last week. I hope it works OK. My son's partner uses that one. Shiseido products are great!

Oh boy, I may be in trouble, or maybe not. The sunscreen I use is not on either list, and I do use it only on my face, sparingly.

The best sunscreen I have is my hat - which I always wear even if it is to go out and get the mail. I may become like my grandmother on my mother's side - brown splotches all over the face, so I am trying to delay it until the point in my life when I don't really give a rip anymore, lol.

For now, though, the quest for no brown splotches continues.

j: I love Noevir! This gal I worked w/ in the 80s sold it and got me hooked. I, like you, have very sensitive skin so I can't just put anything on my face. Once when I use to perm my hair, I had severe burns by my scalp line. My skin tolerates Noevir and I love how non-oily/greasy and light it is. Luckily with age, my skin has turned to oily once again so I only have to use Noevir during winter when it's really dry. There are Noevir sellers on Ebay too. -N

Good topic Jalna! I have had skin cancer twice! I think it was from way too many years of playing on Waikiki Beach, and surfing off Diamond Head. While siting on my board looking for the waves, my left side was always to the sun. I ended up with skin cancer on my left side neck and my left side nose. Both had to be cut out, with multiple stitches.

I used to surf from sun up to sun down all the time! And same thing body surfing at Makapuu! Nobody ever warned us about skin cancer. And I was such a dark haole....I thought I would be fine in the sun actually. I never had sunburn much after I got so tan all the time. So I never worried about it.

In the old days, nobody even heard of skin cancer. Remember how the girls would use baby lotion to get that deep tan while laying out on Waikiki Beach? And that Hawaiian Tropic tanning Oil too! I think the girls used baby oil because it was cheaper. But the girls sure smelled good! ; )

I found it! I can't believe they still make it! With the awareness of skin cancer today. Back in the 1960's and 1970's all of the girls were using this and baby oil to get very dark on Waikiki Beach. And they were always very shiny and proud of it! As they pranced around Waikiki. : ) ......lol

Kay, guess what sunscreen I use for my arms and legs. Neutrogena Sensitive Skin! LOL!

Aunty, not only is your hat a good sunscreen, I think it's very fashionable too.

N, I was a hairdresser for 4 years and I never had problems with scalp burns from perm solution . . . THANK GOD!!!

Mark, yikes about the skin cancer! Glad everything's okay now. I remember that tanning oil! Back then we didn't have as much choice as we do now. Nowadays, I try to find the shade wherever I am. I no l like da sun.

j: when Honolulu Auntie mentioned the brown spots and the sun, that made me think. My mom who has never been in the sun long, even at the beach when we were small kids, she was covered head to toe. And at age 87 she has no brown spots at all. When I was a small kid I wanted to be 'white' like all the other Japanese kids, but now I am so glad I'm not. You see how dark I am and I walk my dogs twice a day and I have never used sunscreen. Cancer happens to dark skin too but not like fair people. So glad that's not one of my major worries reading what others say. -N

N, I'm pretty fair and I got brown spots all over my face now. I never take care when I was younger.

When I was kid, I went out and played all day long, came home when I got hungry everyday in Summer. My skin got so dark but people told me I looked very healthy...now I have age spots...lots of...what the heck!

Me too, Akemi!

No Banana Boat? I used it when I play golf.

I'm glad you use something, Erick. Good to retain your youthful appearance, you know.

Jalna,
This article from a cancer cure newsletter is more about the harmful active ingredients rather than brand name.
Here's an excerpt:
Sunscreen contains cancer causing chemicals that bake into the skin and get absorbed into the bloodstream, over-taxing the liver with toxins.
The main chemical used in sunscreens to filter out UVB is octyl methoxycinnamate (aka “OMC”) which has been shown to kill mouse cells even at low doses. Plus, it was also shown to be particularly toxic when exposed to the sun. And guess what? OMC is present in 90 percent of sunscreen brands!
Titanium dioxide, another common ingredient in sunscreens, has been classified as “a potential occupational carcinogen” by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) even chimed in on the controversy surrounding sunscreen ingredients in an article published this year. Oxybenzone, yet another chemical found in most sunscreens, ironically becomes carcinogenic when exposed to the sun and has been found to be a hormone disruptor.
The EWG recommends consumers avoid oxybenzone, and yet it remains in most major brands of sunscreen.

Oh no, Aunty. Both of the sunscreens that I use contain Titanium dioxide!!
