Gulnaz was 19 years old when she was tied up and raped by her cousin's husband. Her attacker was married, so she was sentenced to three years for adultery. Now she must marry her rapist or stay jailed. Isn't that just insane?! And get this . . . the article also says that there are more than 300 women currently in prison who face a similar situation. This is in Afghanistan - home of the burqa. What is wrong with those people?

I heard about this on NPR. She's also pregnant, AND, the man was found guilty by the court but his family paid off the judge and he didn't have to serve time.
We are lucky to live in a western civilization where women's rights have at least been able to grow rather than be repressed. Sometimes my students are surprised about the kind of stuff that has happened in our own country over time, and they always complain about how all of our books deal with race issues and I'm like, "DUH! Because it was a huge part of our history!"
Hopefully Afghanistan will look back on this time with disbelief at their own ridiculousness.
I hope you're right Mariko.
