Golden Dewlicious Melon

I saw this melon at Costco. I'd never seen a "dewlicious" melon before, and I was curious. It was only $4.00. At the checkout the girl said, "That's one good melon!" Then the girl at the door who checked my receipt said, "That's da bomb melon!" I thought, "Wow, I shoulda grabbed two."

At home when I cut it open, it was pale-colored and juicy-looking and . . .

From Marsha--I bought one at the 99 Cent Store yesterday. It had the same sticker as the one in your photo. I have never heard of this variety. It is very good! Tastes like a honeydew but the skin is a bright yellow. Could it be this melon? Check out this site: http://www.specialtyproduce.com/index.php?item=2236&name=Golden_Honeydew_Melon

Hi Betty, good luck with planting the seeds! Last summer was the first and last time that I tasted this melon. Hope I can find it again this year.

I just got one in a summer harvest basket and wondered what it was, so I googled it, and I found your blog....I am glad you had this entry because I had no idea what it was.

I will have it tonight after dinner. Thanks for this.

You're so welcome, T!

It's not a Golden Honeydew, it actually is a "Golden Dewlicious", it's a hybrid of a cantaloupe and honeydew, grown only by Fisher Ranch in Blythe, CA. During the right season (usually june-august) you can find them in Wal-Mart and Costco. If you get it when it's ripe, it's really sweet. And a little secret - if it isn't quite ripe when you first cut into it, cut it into pieces, wrap it up, and put it in your fridge for a day or 2. I promos it will get a bit sweeter! ;-)

Matori Farms of Scottsdale AZ originally created the hybrid. Matori started as a pushcart fruit vendor at the turn of the 20th century in "The City" That's New York City.

I just bought one of these locally in Tucson AZ. It was delicious and your photo is exactly like what I purchased down to the same company sticker.

Fisher Ranch sends the big Golden Dewlicious to Costco and the small ones to the 99 Cent Only store. Currently Costco is selling them for $2.49. If they are grown with the proper amount of manure, they will be very sweet as long as you cut them open when they are ripe and soft on the end opposite the stem.

Thanks for the tips Anon!

I've tried these melons before and they are great, I can buy them at the $.99 store all the time, so $4 is not that great a buy.

I also found these melons @ the99 cent store in Palm Springs area. After reading all this info I can't wait to go open the ripe one. I bought 2 one a nice golden orange color and a pale green one. Something told me it wasn't yet ripe. Glad I looked this up thanks to your sticker. Everyone enjoy this melon. I'll be back after I try mine.

I bought one at the local 99 Cents store in La Mesa at Baltimore Drive and El Cajon Blvd. Didn't pay $4, though--just 99-cents!

How do you tell when it's ripe?

Jay

99 cents, Jay!! No way we would ever get it that cheap here in Hawaii. Sorry, I don't know how to tell when it's ripe. Also, would you believe that I wrote this post 4 years ago and it was the first and last time that I ever had that melon!

wow I just purchased one of the Dewlicious melons at Wal-mart (only paid $2.68) & it is "DA BOMB"...so sweet & good...i will definitely be purchasing more of these!!!

They are really good! Look for sugar rings at the bottom for the sweetest melon.

They remind me of a large Sprite melon.

We love these! Tried them for the first time from Sam's Club last year. Now we're Costco members and buy them there. It's so hard not to eat the whole thing once we cut it open! DELICIOUS.
