Microwave Sticky Rice

You didn't you know could do that, hah? Microwave sticky rice!!! I decided to try it out one day, so at lunchtime I ran up to Asian Market on Beretania. Okay, okay, I can't even run to the next telephone pole. So I walked fast to the Asian Market and picked up this bag. Note: GLUTINOUS rice, not regular rice.
The directions are in the back of the bag. I kinda had to approximate cause I only had my trying-to-be-green microwavable bowl at work. First you soak 2 cups of rice for 2 hours. Rinse.
Add 1/2 cup of water, cover and heat at "high" for 8 minutes.
Stir rice and add another 1/2 cup of water and heat for 3 more minutes.
Set aside for 5 minutes, then eat!! So easy yeah! Thanks for doing the plating for me , CQ.

There's several steps to that microwave rice, huh. I'll stick to the rice pot. What are you having with it? Looks yum!

Betty, sticky rice is served at Thai restaurants. . . it's kinda like mochi rice. I bought an omelet and choi sum from Tanabe's on Keeaumoku to go with my rice, but sticky rice tastes best with Thai curry.

2 HOURS????????? Are you kidding me?? Who the heck has 2 hours to wait to soak their rice??? Sooo you never said if it tasted like the real kind or not...it looked the same!

Patience, grasshopper. Actually, mine didn't get sticky enough, but that's cause I couldn't cook it for the whole 8 minutes. My styrofoam plate that I used for my cover, started to get warped so I stopped it. CQ made some at home and said it turned out really good. I'll bring you my extra for you to try.

So funny Shun Wah . . . you're right. My bowl could only hold about 1 cup, so that's about 1/2 the amount.

mmmmm. sticky rice ;-) yup, taste good with thai curry; did u know that in thailand, people eat wit spoon, not fork?

Rand, for some reason I thought they ate sticky rice with their fingers, dipping the rice into the curry. I forget why I think that.

jalna, you're right but i just meant in general. an example from the web: "Only the spoon goes in the mouth-the fork is there to push food on to the spoon, a knife is not needed as Thai cookery cuts up meat, fish and veg small prior to cooking. (Noodles are eaten with chopsticks.) It is very bad table manners to eat with a fork-equivalent of putting knife in mouth in west."

not a big deal when non-thais use a fork since they understand that it's a part of their culture.

tons of info on da web but this site gives a little more info: http://www.templeofthai.com/cooking/thai-meal.php

Rand, thanks for the links. You so informative. I thought this statement from the first link was so interesting: "I will not eat at someones house where everyone gets to slobber in everyone else's food, no more than I will use the comunal water glass at the water coooler in the waiting rooms at the doctors offices or the hospitals." So, do you think the writer is saying that there is ONE shared water glass in a place where there are all sick people? YIKES!! AND talking about slobbering in everyone else's food. We ate at a place called Casablaca in Kailua once where we did just that. Some people were freaked.

What???? Slobbering in everyone else's food??? Mercy, that sounds so bad. Cultures are certainly different, to say the least! :)

Ok, so it looks good but how did it taste and was it really sticky??? Aren't microwaves great!!! Great photos as usual!!! They always make me very hungry!!!

Yup Betty, the dishes were served family style and we ate with our hands.

Thanks Susie. The rice tasted good, but it did't get really sticky cause I had to cut the cooking time when my styrofoam plate "cover" started melting.
